  • Shane,

It’s not the firewire audio (your mixer) that causes the delay, it’s an external firewire VIDEO box like the AJA i/o that is the culprit. Your Decklink card is internal, so it’s on the fast bus, hence no delay.

September 17, 2006 at 1:28 am in reply to: DVCPROHD dubbed to DVCAM – Which deck ? ?

[john tipton] “I”m hoping to use firewire out of a Panasonic AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO HD deck to firewire in on a Sony dv deck”

Just be aware that there are something like 900 pages of menu settings on the 1200A. If you want to do this kind of workflow, you must set the deck to send “DV” over firewire, not HD. I think it’s in the 800’s pages.

Other than that you should be fine. You don’t mention what format you’ll be shooting on the varican (24p, 24A, etc.) this makes a huge difference. Be sure you test your workflow from start to finish before you dive in. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, since there are plenty of “gotcha’s” along the way.

  • How are you monitoring audio? Firewire introduces a 5-8 frame delay relative to the audio coming out of the computer. In other words, if you’re monitoring “built in” audio from the computer, it will be 7 frames off from the picture going out to the NTSC monitor from the deck. The only way around this is to use a capture card like the AJA or Blackmagic. Firewire will always cause a delay.

However…. the actual files ARE in sync. Check the waveforms against a slate.

September 8, 2006 at 1:49 pm in reply to: Theory and Practice of Music Bed Volume Levels

    Mark,

I don’t think you can make a general statement about this, like “music should be “X” dB below dialogue. There are many, many factors which can affect this equation. For example, the “intensity” of the music or the “tonal range” of the instrumentation makes a huge difference in how it will interact with dialogue. You can often reduce the “conflict” between music and dialogue by changing the eq of the music and Not changing the volume.

So, my best advice is just listen. If you find your attention split between music and dialogue, then decide which one is important and any given time and favor it. Yes, that means “riding” the volume to fill in the spaces of your dialogue track… but be careful. You don’t want the music track “pumping” whenever there’s a short gap.

    Good luck.

  • It’s in the menu on the deck…. page 800 I think. I’m guessing that your firewire is set to playout something other than what you’re expecting, causing FCP to barf.

This deck is like a swiss army knife… it can do just about anything, however, setting it up to do what you want can be a challenge. The panasonic website has a pdf of the entire menu structure for this deck, which can be a help when trying to figure out what setting you’re looking for.

September 3, 2006 at 7:16 pm in reply to: Getting Audio via Firewire to Broadcast Monitor

Any audio going out via the firewire will experience a delay (3-7 frames usually) relative to the computer monitor. THe only way around this is to use a video CARD that lives inside the computer, like a AJA or Blackmagic. These cards use the pci bus, and therefore can output video in sync with the timeline.

Your settings seem to be correct: firewire out for both picture and sound. Can you confirm that audio is getting to the DV deck? Does that deck have headphones? VU meters? If it’s getting to the deck, then your problem is downstream from there. If it’s not getting to the deck, then try trashing your preference, restarting everything and trying again.

September 2, 2006 at 12:53 am in reply to: FCP Project sharing

    Shane,

Slight correction to your information. XML’s aren’t necessarily needed. We operate a large SAN with multiple editors frequently working on the same episode. As such, they often will open the same project at the same time. Here’s how we do it. Let’s say there’s a “master project” for epsiode # 1800 which lives on the SAN. Editor “A” goes to the SAN, finds the project and copies it to her local drive. Editor “B” does the same thing. They’re now both working on the exact same project at the same time (But from their local drives). When it comes time to save, both editors have their own folder on the SAN, and they will save the project there, with a name and date increment system: for example, “1800cut1.29-20-06MarkR”. The latest date is always the most recent project.

In our case we use X-SAN. We regard the entire X-SAN as “the project”. How we organize and save the media is much more important than any one individual project. FCP can have multiple projects open simultaneously (Unlike AVID), so that’s where we focus our effort. We NEVER use XML to swap info. We just create a separate, small project with only the ‘current” timeline, and send that back and forth.

    Jeremy,

I too had one for a trial run. My conclusion: Too slooooooooooow!

Have you investigated Blu-Ray DVD’s? Approx 50 gig per disc. Can’t be any slower than this.

  • john,

We too are starting to use Final Touch, but there’s still some projects in the pipeline that we’re using the good ole FCP 3 way.

Today I dug a little deeper into this issue and discovered that rendering seemed to make a difference too. Here’s what happens. Zero out your levels using the 3 way. Everything’s fine except now you need to render. Render. Whoops! Everything is now at least 10 points over 100. Strangely, the black levels stay put. Only the high end seems to get extended. Our on-line editors have been throwing a broadcast safe filter on it and calling it a day, but I want to know why this is happening. Any info/comments/ suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
