    Happy weekend!

I”m working on a self funded doc (I”m the shooter, producer, co-director) and I”m trying to figure out an offline workflow.

It’s a one year project being shot on Varicam primarily and P2 as additional camera.
    I”m going to be working on a macbook pro 2.16GHZ w/ 2GB ram and a G-raid 1TB FW800 drive (w/ nitroAV express 34 FW800 card when it becomes available)

I’ve projected the potential number of hours of raw footage I may have for my doc, and it seems that I was grossly underestimating. I could have as much as 100 hours of footage. That being said, I just can’t afford the amount of hard disc space to accommodate all the footage at DVCPRO HD format.

So I”m going dvcam onto DV tapes from my DVCPRO HD camera masters I hope. Then I’ll edit offline with these and online or uprez the project when done.

I wanted to ask you all, I”m hoping to use firewire out of a Panasonic AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO HD deck to firewire in on a Sony dv deck. But will it be frame accurate and time code perfect with dvcam format onto dv tapes?
And which one? I”ll also need to use this deck to connect to my macbook pro w/ fcpro 5.1.1 to digitize everything via firewire. Sony DSR-11 (no rs422), DSR-40 Same as dsr-11 but with rs422) or one of the new HVR M15? Of course, I”m looking to get a used deck, if possible, to save some money.

AND if I”m using firewire workflow, rs-422 is not useful for me, right?

    best!

Just be aware that there are something like 900 pages of menu settings on the 1200A. If you want to do this kind of workflow, you must set the deck to send “DV” over firewire, not HD. I think it’s in the 800’s pages.

Other than that you should be fine. You don’t mention what format you’ll be shooting on the varican (24p, 24A, etc.) this makes a huge difference. Be sure you test your workflow from start to finish before you dive in. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, since there are plenty of “gotcha’s” along the way.

Menu option 894 is where you switch it from HD to DV out via firewire.

    John,

Considering you will be on a tight budget why waste the money on the massive hours of dubbing when you can digitize directly from the 1200A via firewire while downconverting to dv 50 or dvcpro.

You should be much more selective on what you digitize to save on overall drive space.

You might consider making DVD window dubs and have a logger make detail logs on what should be digitized instead of capturing everything.

Check out HD Log from Imagine Products for logging. For your project, it it will be good money spent.

Here’s my reasoning behind making dubs…

    1. This project is going to take a year or more, and I need to use the drives for other projects as well. It costs me about $300.00 to rent a 1200 deck, but only on the weekends when it is available. I figured that I could make quick dubs of all the material so I can spend the time I need logging, digitizing, etc. on my own terms, not on the possible availability of this deck.

    2. When I”m done screening and logging, the footage. I”m going to need to possibly back up the project and wipe the drives so I can work on other projects. If I”ve got DV working tapes, I can reinstate the project whenever I want and I’m not going to be tying up a ton of drive space for such a long time.

    3. If I just go straight from the 1200 to FCPRO, and I have a drive crash or file getting corrupted, I”ll have to re-digitize the camera masters and I don’t want to mess with the masters if I can help it.

3a. If I digitize directly from the 1200 deck, I”ll want to have a copy of everything on another drive in case a drive goes down. I’ve just doubled my drive space needs.

Also, HDlog looks cool, except for the price tag. I have p2log which I use for my hvx200 and its great. My understanding is that it is designed for P2 only anyway.

    What do y’all think?

Well it sort of makes sense. You don’t have to spend time being selective while you’re renting. But then you can be selective with your DV dubs while not renting.

But I wouldn’t consider those DV tapes legitamate “backups”. They are downconverted and they are DV. Offline quality. I don’t know what your delivery requirements are, but it shouldn’t DV. When you redigitize, you want to capture it from the actual HD masters at the best possible quality. Even if you still want to downcovert because it’s an SD delivery, you want to do it Uncompressed, not DV.

    Hey Sean,

By backups, I meant that I have a backup of my offline workflow. So if I have a problem while editing with my dvcam workflow I can always redigitize from the dvcam dubs rather than having to rent a 1200a and redigitize from my camera masters ($$$)
When the film is done I replace the dvcam footage with my dvcpro camera masters and then make an uncompressed d5, then color correct…

I hope I’m making sense. I think/ hope I’m starting to get it.

Another friend of mine has asked me:
“And do you want to have a 24p master or an
    interlaced one with pulldown added?”

I assumed I have to have a 24p master since that is what my film is shot on.

    piece!
