Steve, did you read my VERY long and detailed post about my switch from FCPS3 to CS5.5?

    buy mine cheap 😉

but I see you are in the USA 🙁

Definitely buy a post early 2008 MacPro (not mine!) if you buy used. That way you can upgrade to premiere pro and use a graphics card which can run on a fully 64 bit system. The mercury engine is incredible on Adobe CS 5.5.

    good luck

  • Hi there Alex, thanks for the response, seems my post was too long to attract a lot of interest 😉

Yep, I did find CTRL-K for razor all targeted tracks, and also like the alt drag to replace, like after effects does.

I plan on speaking to adobe about the inability to copy and paste areas marked IO. IMO there should not be things called lift and extract, they should be called cut and ripple cut so one could use the universal terms copy and paste too… seems very weird to have a bunch of other commands that are hidden from view but that perform the most basic of editing tasks.

Its very good to know that the Adobe team working on PP have been and are taking this product so seriously… really encouraging.

    Cheers mate,

July 20, 2011 at 7:09 pm in reply to: Why the urgency to jump to Avid/Adobe RIGHT NOW?

For me the urgency is that FCP8 has been so long in coming, and we have had to put up with 32 bit editor with a pathetic keyframe editor for a very long time, and now that it is clear apple want to dumb down their software for a mass market, the urge to jump is immediate. FCP7 works fine, true, but I have wanted something better for years, and now I am very pleased to have found it in Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5.

See my report on the final cut PRO forum.

[Todd Kopriva] “You’re overcomplicating it a bit. You don’t need to select a preset at all. It’s as simple as choosing QuickTime as the format and then choosing a video codec from the Video Codec menu toward the bottom of the dialog box.”

    Hi Todd,

Yeah, one can do that, if you know you can do that…
But as it stands, the interface is very confusing, right at the top it gives you a choice of DV formats to choose from, why would it do that if that is unnecessary and so prominent.

But thanks, now I know how to do it, but it does need some UI work!

    cheers,
    Mark.

Also, when you finally get to be making your preset, because you selected a DV preset, ALL the parameters must be changed manually, pixel aspect, frame size, field domination etc… There really should at least be 720p and 1080 presets. or a wizard which when you press Custom… it pops up asking HD, SD, 720, 1080 etc…

[Tom Daigon] “Yes this got me as well. If you keep Quicktime as the Format, go to Preset and select Custom. Then furthur down under the Video tab there is a drop down under Video Codec. I think you will find what you are looking for right there.”

    Hi Tom, thanks.

Adobe, WOW this is bad user interface design.
“Custom…” is not there, so you can’t select it.
The user must take a leave from logic, select a format they do not want (DV), and then must click on the codec lower down and alter that, then… Custom… appears above.

Surely in the list of Presets it should have New… or Custom… up front so you know what you are doing, and then the user will know they are not going down the wrong path. I would never have guessed that to make a preset that is NOT a DV preset, I HAVE to first select a DV preset… bizarre.

[Todd Kopriva] “Can you post a screenshot of exactly what you’re seeing, so that I can get a better sense of what’s going on with these missing codecs?”

Hi Todd, thanks… here are the screen grabs – there is only “Quicktime” listed, no “Quicktime components” as with FCP, and in AME there are only DV options for quicktime:

[Todd Kopriva] “Regarding your QuickTime strangeness: Do you have QuickTime 7 on the computer? Adobe software relies on QuickTime 7 (not QuickTime X) for QuickTime features.”

    Hi Todd,

I do have QT7 pro… used to have QTX but installed QT7 from the fcp installation disk a few weeks ago, but have always had all the options in compressor…

    Thanks,
    Mark.

    Hi Todd,
I will be moving my edit system to a brand new PC tomorrow or the next day, so this will be a moot point, but in the last week of editing on PP on a mac, I noticed there are far less codec options than in compressor, for example WMV. I could not find any way to render a WMV file from AME but do it all the time from compressor.

Even more bizarre, I selected Quicktime as the Format, and could not find all the PNG, Animation etc variations of MOV files, just DV!? Very surprising on a mac!

I ended up rendering 20Mbps mp4 file and converting that to WMV in compressor, which is definitely not ideal.

Is there really no way to render to all those MOV formats and WMV using PP/AME on a Mac?
