Shocking and almost unbelievable, NO WMV in compressor!
I’m not sure what game apple were playing there but it strikes me as a very small, head in the sand-type of mentality. As I write, im rendering a mpeg-1 rough cut for my client to see. She is used to WMV which is far better quality and plays back on all the PC’s in her company. Sadly, like me, you will have to use Quicktime and Flip4mac – a rudimentary WMV encoding tool.

I will try that when i next get to work. I doubht they will sort their server side, they are unbelievably strict, so much so I cannot even get my web mail from my host as the ports requred are blocked by our IT dept.

how are you doing matey, LONG time no see.
im using fcp6, i bought that Suite2 box, pretty good stuff (except for compressor which is horrendous).
i think walter b nailed it though, some timeline formats support the rt thing, others dont, and if you say NO to the option to change to some other format, you should still have the RT, albeit not 25fps… i think.

I guess i should NOT say yes to the “ok, change the timeline to suit this first clip” popup when adding a fist clip to a timeline… that way I will always have the RT, right?

I had been converting mpegs to dv files using that mpegdrop programme, and had chosen default pal dv anamorphic, so am suprised FCP would disable unlimited RT when dropping this clip to a new timeline.

Hi again,
I just timed how long it took after pressing “Post Direct” in my previous meessage to be sent to the forum message list display, and that took 74 seconds before I could see the list. I then clicked on my message to read it, and that took another 80 seconds before it showed up…

Hey there again Craig, thanks for the help.

I did import the wmv to fcp but fcp was behaving very un-responsively, so i decided to render it to a mov from fcp… that is what took 78 minutes.

i will try convert the wmv to mov in QTPro on monday… I cant remember whether i tried that initially. It would be great if this could be as fast as you say, since often my clients give me wmv clips to add to the project = definitely not ideal, but hey, thats what the client gives, thats what i have to use!

You could use Episode to convert WMV to whatever. It’s very fast. It’s very not free though. $399.

BTW with Flip4Mac (Player Pro and up) you should be able to import WMV right into FCP”

yeah, i have looked at episode on the web, pricey…
as far as flip4mac and fcp goes, as i mentioned earlier in the thread, my 8 core said 78 minutes to render a 3 minute wmv to mov, and froze at 77mins, whereas my 5 year old pc laptop competed the same process in 9 minutes – so i may continue to use the old girl for relatively fast conversions!

if flip4mac could do what that mpeg streamclip does with mpegs, id be very chuffed.

Im busy downloading that as i write! (it’s done…)
I will give it a bash tomorrow.

Any WMV freebies, it seems flip4mac is really a QT plugin, is that right? It’s performance is very slow since I guess it was flip4mac which was causing my 8core to be able to render the wmv (albeit at an incredibly slow rate)
