boy, you have a lot more faith in programmers than I do. Experience tells me othewise – not that they dont KNOW, but that the applications often do not default to the correct setting. (certainly the case in Premier)

yeah, that may be it.
I had done the conversions using QT player, but one of them was done exporting a DV MOV file from Premier (on a PC) – so this may have accounted for the inconsistency.

Anyhoo, i have resorted to outputting a Progressive DVD, not ideal, but who knows, they may use it on a computer, in which case the progressive would be better!

Yep, directly from FCP to Compressor.

Hi guys,
its pretty mystifying,
all the footage clips are lower field first DV PAL, the timeline was on DV PAL, but eventually to get the job done I set it to ProRes Progressive and rendered out a not terribly nice progressive mpeg2 for dvd as a compomise.

i rendered, authored and burned 10 disks, and got so many nuances from all the various ways I tried to get it all working fine. At one point I had the transitions smooth but the video running with the wrong field order. Some how FCP had it that it should render my transitions at the opposite field dominance as my video clips. No matter what I set the timeline to, and rendered out in compressor, I could not get both transitions and video clips to both be smooth.

I also had some Motion animations which were superimposed over the video. These were created in motion using PAL DV LFF settings, and these were smooth all the time, except when I set the timelne to UFF.

These NLE>DVD issues seem common in the PAL world when working with DV footage. Premier Pro also had issues, not defaulting to the correct field dominance when exporting.

When I get a mo I may do some testing on it.

Yep, i did make a preset, and made sure it was UFF.

DV is lower field first in both PAL and NTSC, but in SD and DVD PAL is upper field first.

This project im sure has been partially bosched because it was a project i had done on Premier on a PC and had rendered all the AVIs to MOV’s.

Im no fundi at keying but it seems to me that the green fix you guys did has a soft edge, ie if you key it, there is an edge due to the not-so green pixels between the green bg and the woman… so perhaps the conversion from white to green caused this edge which is now apparent when you key the green.

possible?
how did you change it from white to green, and why didnt you key it at that stage of the process since you would have to have done most the dirty work already?

I’m using mpeg2 dvd fast HQ for 90 minutes setting, set the fields to UPPER (as it should be for PAL dvd) – see pasted below.
The whole video is really smooth, just the transitions between some shots seems either reversed or Progressive, but is not smooth.

How would I get to see if my source footage is being interpreted correctly by compressor?

When I was on Tiger, Motion integration was pretty stable, though Motion does crash a lot more than the other Studio2 apps in my experience.

I didnt find it slowed FCP down much, once rendered it was just like a regular clip.

With Leopard ive had major problems, cannot play back any motion project in FCP for more than about 30 seconds, then get beach ball crash – not responding – and have to kill process.

I dont know if any of this relates to your issue, but would very much like the integration sorted and made stable.

You cant do that with FCP unfortunately,
they have a Distort parameter which you have to use, trial and error style, in conjunction with the scale slider (really terrible, I know!)

yeah, ive got a Sony PAL component monitor already, but thats SD, I was thinking to be able to monitor 1920×1080 interlaced.

I guess I could have some down converter for the fields thing, and a Dell to see a pretty picture.
