December 13, 2014 at 4:45 am in reply to: MXF extreme sluggishness

I pull everything off the server and edit on an internal 1tb secondary drive on my MBP.

The only difference is that I generally rewrap the mxf. When 10.1.4 came out I started bringing the mxf files directly into FCPX, but noticed the sluggishness and wondered if the performance was different between the rewrapped mxf and the raw one.

I suppose it’s possible the 8 channels of audio might be slowing things down. I often wonder how FCPX deals with waveforms when I’m turning tracks on and off in the event browser, and FCPX has to redraw a 20 minute clip.

That’s why I was wondering if anyone else was having any issues.

  • How about this…

Create a smart collection that shows all used clips.
Select all the clips showing in the bin and option-x to clear the ranges.
Select all the clips again, and label them somehow to indicate that they are used.

If you don’t use “reject” for anything, you can reject all the used clip ranges.
Setting the browser view to “hide rejected” will hide all of your used clips.

Or, you can keyword the used clips with a keyword “used”, turn on your skimmer info in the event browser, and when you skim, you’ll see the “used” keyword in the skimmer info.

Or using the “used” keyword, you can create other smart collections that hide anything with the “used” keyword.

I agree that a unused view reflecting all of your projects would be helpful.

Generally, when you have the transition selected in the timeline, you’ll see little yellow circles connected to the top of your clips. Drag these around to select the thumbnail.

believe it or not, some people get confused by FTP. They open it in a browser window, and can only download files.

I’m just trying to come up with some alternatives.

And when you say “for single files it’s fine” you’re talking about Sugar Sync, not WeTransfer, right?

I’m guessing that to send files that large they need to be on mac yosemite.

The more universal and the more foolproof, the better.

    Thx.

Not actually a blank clip. It’s an adjustment layer. See a previous reply for a link you can download.

Basically it’s a text clip from motion, with no text. When you connect this over a series of other clips, and apply an effect to the connected adjustment clip, everything underneath has the effect applied.

It can be quite handy, although if you’re going to tweak each clip anyway, the blanket effect may be pointless.

I’m curious about the fact that you can’t play the avc-hd streams.

I did a project earlier this year that was shot on a FS-700 where the guy shot avc-hd 100, and I was able to edit it, no problem.

The bitrate is about 116 Mbit/s, and I’m not even on a raid, just an single e-data drive.

I found that I could even handle two of the fat streams when I has better performance selected in FCPX.

Why can’t you play the 50 Mbit/s video.

I’m on an old 2010 MBP.

October 15, 2014 at 1:51 am in reply to: Need advice on how to ingest Sony .MXF

I recently had to do this in order to ingest xdcam footage from SxS cards.

I don’t entirely remember specifically, but I installed a UDF driver, so my computer could see the SxS cards.

I also added drivers for XDcam codecs.

    Then I installed XDcam Transfer.

Now I can plug an SxS card directly into my mac, and FCPX will see it and allow me to ingest the footage, rewrapping it so there’s no needless transcoding. Very sweet.

I can also export mxf files out of our Sony media server, and use XDcam Transfer to rewrap the files to bring them into FCPX, again, without transcoding.

I remember it being a bit of a convoluted process to find all of these files, however once installed, everything is working file.

You can see which components you have installed by opening XDcam transfer, and under the help menu select “check for installed components”.

    Good luck

Likewise, I copy, and paste with option-v to add the connected clip.

I just make sure I’m parked at the start of the clip I’m copying so the copy ends up in the same place, and not half way down.

Doing the option-drag to make a copy, I like that I get a window giving me feedback of how much the clip is displaced, making it pretty easy to slide left or right until the window displays 0:00.

I agree that adding the ability to press “shift” would make things easier.

Locked inside your browser? Inside the event browser? You can’t see your media in the event browser? Or are you trying to find your original media in the finder?

You may need to upload a frame grab to show us how the folder is locked in your browser.
