Anyone know a sneaky shortcut for option dragging a clip into the layer above to create a duplicate?

I don’t even know what the command is called.

    Thank you

    Select the clip with c.

    Command-c. (copy)

    Option-v (paste connected).

If not, then you hold option, click and drag the clip up.

[Jeremy Garchow] “hold option, click and drag the clip up.”

Probably the easier/better option, yes. 😉

I find option drag a bit tedious. Thus the OP. I guess I’m hard to please.

    Uh-huh. Okay.

    There’s always ⌘C and ⌥V.

It’s definitely still annoying that you can’t combine option drag with shift to keep the duplicate from moving horizontally. Instead you have to rely on snapping or the visual +/- cue (which gives bizarre results sometimes dragging from a secondary. In FCP legacy I always held shift and the muscle memory won’t go away. If you hold shift it cancels the duplication.

Copy paste connected is my go to move.

Likewise, I copy, and paste with option-v to add the connected clip.

I just make sure I’m parked at the start of the clip I’m copying so the copy ends up in the same place, and not half way down.

Doing the option-drag to make a copy, I like that I get a window giving me feedback of how much the clip is displaced, making it pretty easy to slide left or right until the window displays 0:00.

I agree that adding the ability to press “shift” would make things easier.
