This may not be the right forum for this, but I love the community here.

I use dropbox to share my large files with others, but often I need to receive large files from others, and DB folder sharing seems better for people I have a long-term relationship with creatively, not the one time media transfer.

Any faves here? We need a way for our show to receive large files (possibly a couple of gigs) from any number of people.

    Thx.

YouSendIt is now HighTail. Personally I do almost everything with WeTransfer. It’s web-based and I’ve had good results. Free with a limit of 2GB per day. More if you sign up. The good part is you can easily get outside clients to figure out how to use it in order to send you things.

Other services I’ve used with decent results include Google Drive and Sugar Sync.

Also straight email works now in Yosemite thanks to MailDrop. It allows up to 5GB attachments via Mail.app.

I’m guessing that to send files that large they need to be on mac yosemite.

The more universal and the more foolproof, the better.

    Thx.

Love WeTransfer. Sugar Sync, not so much. For single files it’s fine, but if you need to share a folder of items, they require a signup on the downloader and will try to bill you later after your “free trial” is over.

Whatever happened to good ole’ FTP?

    Mac not required to receive.
Mac (Yosemite) sees it as attached and others should get a link.

believe it or not, some people get confused by FTP. They open it in a browser window, and can only download files.

I’m just trying to come up with some alternatives.

And when you say “for single files it’s fine” you’re talking about Sugar Sync, not WeTransfer, right?

Hightail (the former YouSendit) – has been doing a good bit of development lately.
It’s gotten more like dropbox in terms of allowing you to set up a recurring pathway between a sender and a receiver (or multiples of each) and initiate auto sends via dropping the file into a local target folder.

I use it regularly for large transfers, but like all the other similar services, uploads are far slower than downloads.

When you need to have to have multiple people submit to a single receiver, the problem is always going to be that gap – which has nothing to do with the transfer service. I don’t know of anything that addresses that since it affects FTP transfers as much as it affects systems that use a middleman server setup.

Yousendit/Hightail. All the receiver needs to do is click on a link and then find it in their download box. Still baffles some though. Drop box is too complicated for those not familiar with it. Haven’t tried others though.

On a side note: I personally much prefer copy.com over DropBox. The functionality is pretty much identical, only you get a full 15GB to start off with and even 20GB if you use this link: https://copy.com?r=D4Fz3M
