I’ve given up on trying to keep my timeline in any sort of order. Occasionally I’ll elevate an audio clip if I see that there’s room above it, otherwise I just try to let the clips lay where they want.
It’s forcing ourselves to “think different”, which in many cases isn’t bad at all, even though it requires effort at first.
The timeline index is our new best friend. It’s so easy to solo tracks based on keywords or “roles”. In many ways this makes it even easier to identify and isolate or modify clips in the timeline.
If you want neatness, select every clip of one particular type and create a compound clip out of it. If you use your imagination, it almost looks like a track. Be careful however if you break it back into clips. I had unexpected results from doing that, and I decided I wouldn’t do that if I didn’t need to.
However you can apply effects to the compound clip, and it makes it act like a bussed effect.

It simply wouldn’t load. FCX gives you informaiton in the splash screen as it starts up. I watched my projects load, but when it got to the one I was working on, it stopped. It hung up. No progress. After 10-15 minutes I figured nothing was going to happen and I forcibly quit the program, removed the project and event from the FCX folders, and was able to open the application quite quickly.
I’m sure my event and project files got messed up somehow.

Sure, now if we could just get FCX to do this automatically on a regular basis, I wouldn’t be freaking out about losing my edits.
This shouldn’t be that difficult for Apple to do.

I haven’t been able to use the roles “tab” to select clips, however, select the “clips” button in the timeline browser, right-click on the column headings, and turn on the “roles” column.
Now you can type the roles name in the search field, and select the clips in the timeline index, and NOW you can add your effect to all of them at once.
It’s not a bus filter, but you can make it work.

Yeah, I get that. I’ve been tempted to get me one of those punky little usb drives at costco for $60-70 and just use that for sfx and production music. It’s easy enough to carry around, even when I’m portable, and I can always turn on the “copy” option when importing it to my project.

Yes. It was unintentional.
Perhaps this is double dangerous because of the “save-less” way FCX constantly updates your project.
I’m still buggled about what to do for safety.
I may just need to create a copy of the project, without renders every 30-45 minutes, but it takes time, and starts filling up my project bin. Not the best.

I actually found it just the opposite of annoying. It was quite easy to put a limit on the number of saves, but in these days of huge hard drives, the petty project file has such a small footprint, that I could save 100 versions of each project, and never ever need to be bothered with all those files, until the emergency, and my oh my was I ever glad it was there.

It’s probably too late. I’ve already re-created my event and started re-editing.
I think it was just something about the project and/or event files that went pooch. Removing the folders for the current project, and FCX opened with every other project in place. Put them back, and no go.
In the future if my cable gets pulled, I’ll remount and run disk utility, to make sure what’s on there doesn’t get written over or further corrupted, but I still think we need a save vault.
And I find it interesting that in both the events folder and the projects folder, the events and projects all have the same name.
CurrentVersion.fcpevent and CurrentVersion.fcpproject seems to imply that there’s room for other versions in here.
Does this mean they might someday make “PreviousVersion.fcpproject?”

Yeah, and hopefully you won’t end up listening to music on your ipod and suddenly be listening to “footsteps over wet gravel.”
Do you have all of your sfx on an external volume? Do they just go away when you don’t have your media drive hooked up, and appear back when the drive is mounted? Or do you have a standalone edit station?
My problem is that I use my laptop for personal use as well as all my editing. I also have several external drives, separated by clients. It’s easy enough to use up a few dozen gb on a drive, and keep all of my sfx on all of my drives, but the drives all have different names.
I suppose I could create a partition on all of my drives with same name just to hold a copy of sfx and production music, but doing that on drives that already hold lots of media probably isn’t practical.
You see where I’m going.
Perhaps this is also where we can have all sorts of metadata tagging sound effects by the kind, and just create an event for sfx. It would be instantly searchable, and I could create a copy on as many drives as I want to. It would be fairly instantly searchable by starting to type in a word to filter. Maybe I’ll try that.

I haven’t tried exporting using compressor, but if you do, you should be able to set an in and out. I’m sure it will be much slower than exporting from FCP7, but that’s another post.
