Yep, that sounds like a good workaround.
I use the “lift from storyline” all the time, but I never thought about using it like this.
There seems to be a whole lot of little adjustments that take extra time to perform that frustate the crap out of me. This looks like a keeper however. Thx.

[Andy Neil] “I’m not sure I know what you mean? Are you talking about clips connected to the clip you’re sliding?”
Yes.
Don’t you ever want to slip the clip, and leave all the connected clips exactly where they are? Perhaps it’s a bit of music, or a soundbite, and it’s perfectly placed in the timeline, but you decide you want to slip the clip just a little bit because of the action in the shot.
Presently, there is no easy way to slip the clip without moving the attached clips. I may have a couple of b-roll shots and a sound effect or a soundbite. Currently I need to slip the clip, then move each attached clip back to where it was.
Sometimes I can move the connection point to a different clip, freeing up the clip I want to slip, but not always.
So now I need to do it in two steps to slip the clip then move the attached media back.
It was a problem that didn’t exist before the connected clip paradigm in FCX.

October 8, 2011 at 8:00 pm in reply to: Aid me with this… removing a clip by extending the previous clip.[Andy Neil] “I’m confused how the workflow you describe necessitate extending edits in that way.”
Try this.
Place a gap between two clips.
Now try to extend the first clip to remove the gap.
I generally go to the edit between the first clip and the gap, and press “\” to select the edit.
Press the DOWN key to move the skimmer to the edit at the end of the gap.
Press Shift-X to extend the edit at the end of the clip to then end of the gap.
On the timeline, it looks perfect. The first clip rolled over the second, removing it.
However, look in the timeline index. Select the first clip to find it in the timeline index. Right after it, you will see a gap clip in the index. You won’t see it in the timeline. Zoom all the way into your timeline, and it’s still invisible. Select it in the timeline index and look at the properties window, you will see it has a length of zero. The invisible gap messes with your trimming now, and must be removed.
Perhaps I need to stop using the extend function. Perhaps it’s just a legacy workflow from FCP7 that I need to remove from my workflow. That’s why I’m wondering what other people do. Perhaps their timelines are full of these zero length gap clips, and they don’t even know it.

[Andy Neil] ” Slip an slide edits can be performed with the trim tool. I just posted a tutorial here on the cow about it.”
Yes, It was a good tutorial.
What’s your workaround for slipping the clip without moving the attached media?
and more things I miss:
I miss the replace key. Replace from start and end are good, but there should also be a replace that uses the cursor as the reference.
I used the term automation gain before when I meant normalization gain. I actually miss both.
I miss the duration window. I used that quite a bit, and I don’t fancy hitting CTL-D every time I want to see the duration.
I’ll think of more.

[Andy Neil] “Curious Mark, what things you would like to have been kept from FCP 7 (aside from obviously mulicam I suppose)?”
I miss my automation gain. There’s probably something buried in an audio effect.
I can’t version my edits like I could in 7. I can create a duplicate timeline, but either without the renders, or duplicating all the render media.
I can’t slip a clip in the timeline without moving the attached clips.
Copying and pasting just the attributes I want is a HUGE fail.
Favorite effects I miss. Yes, I can save a particular setting and recall it, but it’s nowhere as simple as dragging your effect with it’s parameters into a bin, then applying that to another clip, or group of clips.
I miss just seeing the opacity line on the video in the timeline. To see it in X I need to first open the video animation, then click the teeny little box to expand the opacity.
There is no autosave vault. Yes, it is needed. I can’t tell you how many times my ass has been saved with the autosave vault.
Clip relinking.
CMD [ and ] to raise and lower the clip volume 3db.
Selective exporting of the timeline. If in and out don’t work, perhaps we could use markers.
Speaking of in and out, the points disappear far to easily.
I can’t consolidate my media anymore. Perhaps that’s not so necessary since I’m not on tape anymore.
Even little things like the need to hit CTL-P before I type in a timecode. With a clip selected, why can’t I just start typing in the timecode?
Reverse match-frame to find a frame in the timeline.
Dupe detection.
The list goes on, but these are the things I used the most that are no longer with us.
I’m sure many of these will be added, but so many workarounds.
Aren’t there things you miss? Besides the multiclip?

I started using this from day one. Since I don’t need to send anything out to protools or a colorist, I don’t miss that.
My first project took me about 3 times as long because of the paradigm shift in the timeline, but I’m getting used to it.
I have a larger paid project with a tight deadline, and I decided to take the chance and do it on FCX. The organization tools are great. I’m really loving the skimmer these days, once I got used to it. I’m getting used to the magnetic timeline, but I’m still not convinced it’s any faster. It’s much quicker to start with, but by the time I make all of my audio trims, I’d say it’s taken me longer.
It’s quite a change, and my brain hurt trying to see the path through the interface to get me to my final product. It required “thinking different”, and I can’t honestly recommend it to people using FCP7. I can laud the great new tools, but also talk about the frustrations with the bugs and the missing features, so with my friends I give a marginal thumbs up. Unless they’re the adventurous type, I tell them to stick with what works.
I understand the “version 1.0” nature of this thing, but I really wish they could have found a way to keep more of the the good things from FCP7.
Meanwhile, I’m addicted to the organizational tools, so I’m continuing to use it. They just can’t come up with updates fast enough for me however.
I could use another one right about now.

When it comes to things like multiple title clips, I like to option-drag to make copies of the clips.
You can create one title for the Roman, and one for the Kanji, setting them up separately for the leading you like.
Give these two clips distinct names so you can identify them in the timeline index and turn them all on or off easily. That is, call the Roman title “Roman”, and the Kanji “Kanji”. ( you can also use video roles for this as well.)
Now once you have your first title in the timeline, use your selection tool (press “A”) then holding the option key down, select the title clip, and drag it to the next place you need the title, and let go. This should create a copy of the first clip. Now with the new clip selected, go into the text properties, and you can paste your text into the text box there. Now just trim the end of the text clip and you’re ready for the next subtitle.
Need a copy of the Kanji clip, use the opt-drag to create a copy of the first Kanji clip you made, and you can place it right over the Roman title.
Once you have your timeline populated with the subtitles, you can use the timeline index to select all of your roman titles, then disable them by pressing V. You can turn them back on and do the same thing with the Kenji clips to disable them.
Does this help?

I feel like we’re going in circles. It’s Groundhog day again. Every day I wake up thinking there will be new posts, and it’s the same old thing.
I’ve gone through the stages of grief with FCX. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. My problem is that once I get to acceptance, I start editing a project and go through the entire cycle all over again.
Apple did a stupid thing. Several stupid things. However, their new product is fairly amazing. In my opinion, it gets us closer to performing the “final cut” within the single app than the legacy version. FCP7 had dodgy audio effects, weak scopes and color tools. Between the powerful audio effects, the scopes and the ability to create our own looks in motion, this fairly rocks.
I’m convinced that they want this new product to be a product for pros. Does the casual user really need red support? XML export? High-end logic effects? Sub-frame audio editing? Multi-track export? Professional broadcast monitor support?
I’m also convinced that calling this Final Cut 10 is completely false advertising. This isn’t iMovie, but it’s also not FCP. This is version 1 of a brand new software that will hopefully not take 10 years to get us back to where we were with FCP7. It WILL take time to evolve. It will probably take lots of time.
After 3 months, we got back the ability to export multiple tracks, and some bug fixes, but no movement on the litany of things the pros want and need to do their jobs. I like roles, but I was hoping for so much more. Even with the bug fixes, I’m still getting crashes.
Honestly, I could be very happy working between FCP7 and FCX except for one thing. If my edit starts stalling in X, I have no way of finishing in 7 or vice versa. I never had that worry with the FCP upgrades, because they always added features, never taking them away.
I’m still using X. I love the speed of the basic editing. I really enjoy the skimmer, and even the filmstrip view. I like the keywords, and the ease of filtering the clips with the search box. I love the timeline index. I never want to go back to converting everything to prores before I edit it.
I still believe they could have added this all to FCP7 without the giant paradigm shift, and they would have left the other NLEs in the dust. As it is, I’m trying to imagine how to explain to other editors in my shop why it’s worth the headache of learning a new paradigm, if the application can’t do many of the things we need it to do without many awkward workarounds and added efforts.
Apple said they will add multicam in early 2012, along with professional broadcast monitoring. At this rate, I figure it will be 2016 before I see things get close to where they were before June 21.
Meanwhile, I’m still using FCX as well as FCP7. I purchased Creative Suite 5.5 while it’s half price, but haven’t started learning it in earnest. I expect that shortly after the price goes back up, a new version will come out, and by the time I spend the money to upgrade I’ll be close to the price of the new product.
Try X. If you like it, use it. If you don’t, keep using 7, or bite the bullet, curse Apple and start learning PP or Avid. I don’t expect Apple will ever go back and give us FCP8. They will lose lots of customers, who will spend lots of money switching over their systems. They will also continue to improve their new little monster, and probably gain alot of new customers as well.
In my opinion, Apple demonstrated contempt and disrespect with their brash dismissal of tracks and their unwillingness to speak about what they did, forcing us to worry about what to do to keep our futures safe. However, there are many things about X that delight me, and bring the fun back to my editing process. There are at least as many things that frustrate me and make me take more time to do things that were simple and straightforward in 7.
To put it bluntly: She may be a bitch, but man is she ever hot.

I’m taking liberties but it seems to fit…
If you have an NLE on whom you think you can rely
You are a lucky man.Be careful of what you put your faith in.
I saw that movie in college, and was so impressed with the storytelling, I went back to see it again the next day.

[Jeremy Garchow] “First, did you try trashing prefs?”
Yep. No help.
And I don’t have time now to let it sit for hours.
Editing always goes faster the second time you do it! Unless you’re cowposting, then it takes longer.
