All very good points…
Let me just throw in my two cents.
We are an XDCAM HD shop with HDV support. Almost everything we do is captured DVCProHD. Why? Space. ProRes is awesome, don’t get me wrong but it does take twice the space that DVCProHD does.
A one minute show open in DVCProHD is about 100 meg. A one minute show open in ProRes is about 213 meg. Same show open, same graphics. Is there a noticable difference… Barely. If DVCProHD is so bad, why is it a standard format for all HD stations?
So… all in all. This whole debate depends on lots of variables. What works for one shop, may not in another. This is the amazing wonderful world of FCP. There is a million ways to do the same thing.
I use ProRes on occasions where graphics are involved. It performs so much better. Besides, the original post from Dannyboyfl said that he is using a Kona 3. AJA built-in realtime support for DVCProHD, just as they did for HDV.

There are sometimes that a good ole tape dub is needed. There are workarounds… but if you need to recapture it again later, you’ll have to go thru the same ole headaches.
Pre-stripe a tape and dub it firewire.

ALWAYS a good idea before ANY upgrade. If you can, make multiple version on multiple drives. This way if one thing doesn’t work that you overlooked, it will on an older setup.
Personally, I would if you have the space available, insert a new drive and start fresh with Leopard. Most issues arise from upgrades.

I have to agree with you, Walter.
We have been producing more than 100 episodes for the past two years without issues, other than the obvious ones you’ve seen here. But there’s always a fix or work around for them.
The one thing that most people miss about FCP, is that you can do anything a multitude of ways. And if you can’t, its your fault, not the program. FCP allows us to do so much more than most of the COW really knows. Alot of us older guys here remember the old days… Look at what we can do now!

I just wonder how this will play out with the Liquid series of products that Avid bought a few years ago.
Seems like it may be a good move for them… but there could be a down side to all of this, too.

You’re right. Quicktime does offer timecode support now. BUT, I think that most users are looking for a heads up display just like the decks with character output.
I think that would be a great feature to have in the software, along with the ability to output proxy files with this info embedded on the video track, not just in it but on it. This is what I think that Proper Modulation was speaking of.

Why would you want one continuous file?
When you select all of the files and export, you export all of the files into FCP as individual files. If some some strange reason you really need it to be just one file, place all of your clips into a timeline and you’ll have the same thing that you could either export or nest into another timeline.

I do exactly what you are talking about everyday and have been for the past year now.
We capture and edit in HD, could be XDCAM HD or DVCProHD. Then we downconvert on the output to SD for broadcast air. We keep a HD copy on the shelf for archival purposes along with the SD Master fro broadcast.
I have a Mac Pro Quad 3.0 using an AJA Kona 3 card.
XDCAM allows you to do what ever you feel most comfortable with, workflow-wise.
