[Ben Baudhuin] ” have I received some bogus info? “
I wouldn’t say that…. But FCP has very different requirements than everything else on the Mac. So, I would suggest going back to 4 gig for now, and then upgrading to a full 8 gig.
By the way, the Mac Pro can go as high as 16 gig when you purchase 2 gig RAM bars.
As for cutting in ProRes 422… We’ve done this alot when dealing with HDV footage and everything seems to work fine on the Mac Pro system. We have two systems just like yours.

Two things, Ben…
First, the memory you have installed is mismatched. This will cause lots of issues with realtime support and unnecessary rendering. In a Mac Pro system, you should have at least 4 gig of RAM and then install in multiples of four (4, 8, 16, 32). Next, you just can’t install any memory that’s rated for the Mac Pro, you really need for these to be all of the same memory from the same manufacturer. For now as a test for you, remove 2 1-gig bars and make sure that the memory is spanned across the risers evenly.
Secondly… Use an external SATA for editing material such as this. Adapter cards are decently priced and the drives are much higher performance. One drive I would suggest for this – Sonnet Fusion F2 drive.
Give this a shot and life will be easier.

Well…
Sounds like someone has told you the wrong information.
There are lots of use here that have been using internal Blu-Ray drives on our Mac Pro systems using Roxio’s Toast. It works just fine. Some here are using Adobe Encore (CS4 is the preferred app), others are different more costlier programs.
Its all up to you on what your needs are.

You have to rename your discs in the Transfer Software – “Source”.

All good points to check… Those were my first things to look at, Jerry.
Here’s where it gets really weird… I can capture and export using Premier Pro CS3 to my DV deck. But FCP… It shows the deck as missing. Only in FCP is this happening. iMovie can see the deck just fine.
So… for the meantime, I’m having to export my sequences from FCP using Quicktime Conversion – setting it to DV stream and then importing it into Premier Pro and writing it to tape from there.
Makes you go, hummm….

I’m sorry…. I said that backwards. I meant that I have it set to DV SP.
It will output to DV in Premier Pro CS3 but the render of the program looks really fuzzy.
Yes, I have the Easy Setup set to DV-NTSC… Firewire going straight into my Mac, not through a hub.

Ok… This is getting really frustrating.
I just tried to output using Premier Pro CS3. It works… but the video looks really fuzzy after render. I even output about three minutes of my timeline as a test.
But still a no go in FCP.

[Jerry Alto] “Wayne- I’m confused. Is your tape HDV and you are trying to downcovert or do you have a DV tape that you are trying to bring into FCP as DV?”
I’m sorry… In my frustration, I forgot to clarify myself. I’m having to output a DV sequence. I have iLink set to DV SP, the deck is set to DV SP and I have restarted FCP many times, rebooted the computer and trashed the prefs. Still nothing…

I just tried to use the deck in iMovie… and it works just fine. The problem is with FCP 6.0.5.
