Just as a friendly reminder…
You did remind your client that they will need the newest Quicktime available, didn’t you? That usually causes a problem with any PC. Our Macs have much better support for Quicktime playback than any PC available. Its a Mac thing.

To be honest… I can’t believe you still have a 3/4″ machine that still works… Ours died about 5 years ago and we have had no need for one since.

Bitrates and actual bitrates are always different in FCP. DV25 records to FCP around 3.6 mb/s, DV50 is around 6.2 mb/s, and it goes higher for each increase. Uncompressed 8-bit HD is around 162 mb/s.
Just beacuse its DV25 doesn’t mean that it plays back at 25 mb/s. Remember the computer files are compressed and when you play back the video it decompresses the video on the fly to its maximum possible for that clip. Therefore a DV25 clip that is 3.6 mb/s will decompress and play bak at 25 mb/s on the fly but your file is still actually at 3.6 mb/s.
I hope this doesn’t confuse you and don’t think in terms like MPEG video where 3.6 mb/s is too low of quality. That only applies to MPEG and web based video compressions.

It doesn’t really matter to me… FCP only uses about 2.5 gig of system memory as a maximum amout so anything above that can be used for whatever. Besides that, the programs you mentioned really aren’t resource hogs.
Now, if you edit with DVD Studio Pro open, you’ll notice a system slow down, just because it is a system resource hog. Otherwise, you’ll be fine. I do it all of the time. Its not unusual to have Safari, Mail, FCP, Photoshop, iTunes, Compressor, and the Kona Control Panel open all at the same time without any problems what so ever.

Bud… I’m sorry… But that doesn’t suprise me in the least. Let ask you this… I know the deck has a price of around 15k, so is it possible for you to invest in an AJA IO? You can pick up a used one for around $1000 and a new one for about $1500. It would be a very worthy investment for you to consider. It is a firewire interface so that all you need to hook it to your computer and it gives you all of the analog and digital connections available. If you had an AJA IO, you could have come out of your machine using the SDI connection and placed it into any codec available.
Just something to really consider…

In that case, I would have to say that there maybe a setting on your machine for firewire output. And knowing Sony, I’m sure that you can only play Sony DV and DVCAM thru the firewire, not DVCPRO. I’m just guessing… Sony have been know to do stuff like that.
Do you have a capture card installed on your Mac? You may have to do it that way, if there’s not a machine setting that can be adjusted.

Are you hooked using firewire? DV NTSC is the same thing as DVCPRO25 according to FCP. But if you are hooked up using component video out and analog audio, then DVCPRO50 is a better compression than DV25.

No… there is not. Try setting your Easy Setup to DV50 NTSC 24p, unless you’re working in PAL since you say your video is NTSC 25fps. NTSC can only be 24p, 30p or 30i, not 25fps. That would be PAL.
DV50 is DVCPRO 50 which is a great codec to work with. Apple just wanted to mess with your mind…
