  • Digitizing 3/4″ into FCP Problem

Posted by Anonymous on June 15, 2006 at 9:08 pm

I’m running a Sony 3/4″ V0-9850 into FCP 5.0.4 with RS-422 deck control – analog video/audio into Canopus converter box – firewire into computer. In LOG/CAPTURE I have proper deck control and proper video/audio signals. But when I go to capture (tried batch, capture now, Non-controllable device) I get the same File Error: Unknown File. Anyone have experience bringing 3/4″ into FCP?

    Machine:
power mac g5 dual 2 ghz
    2.5g ram
    mac osx 10.4.6

Nevermind – it was a faulty firewire port causing the problem, switched computers and now it works.

To be honest… I can’t believe you still have a 3/4″ machine that still works… Ours died about 5 years ago and we have had no need for one since.

I have just the opposite problem.
All of our 3/4″ machines work, the ones we still have, but the tapes are failing; the oxide is crumbling off the base. We can no longer play any of our tapes on anything. And yet we need to recapture these images and events.

So, I’m ALWAYS looking for someone who knows someone who knows aof s ervice that specializes in recovery of 3/4″ legacy.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Similar here. I still have 2 fully functional BVU-800’s and several V0-5600’s, along with hundreds of legacy masters that need to be digitized for posterity. I imagine I’ll have tape issues when I finally get around to doing the job, or better yet, finding someone to do it cheap.

    FWIW…
I have a friend in Burbank that specializes in vintage video formats. He can transfer just about any old format, 2″ Quad, 1/2″ reel to reel, U-matte and so on, to a newer format for preservation. A while ago he sent me an article about a procedure for saving a tape in poor condition, usually due to failing or deteriorating binders. It involved literally baking the tape before transfering it to a newer format. I don’t have the article any more but you can contact David through his web site at:

Might be worth a try to save that old tape.
    Tell him I said “Hi”.
