I see this all of the time. It started with FCP 6 and has carried over into FCP 7. Sometimes, its all the render files, but most of the time, it’s only a few render files that got lost. But it happens about 90% of the time for us, too.
I’ve been unable to narrow it down to a codec since we use ProRes422, DVCProHD and XDCAM HD – all 1080i29.97.

I second Shane’s response.
We do this kind of work all of the time and it works very well.
As a matter of fact, if you look in your render prefs, you’ll see that you have an option to render XDCAM HD footage into the ProRes422 codec. These two codecs marry very well and its preferred to render XDCAM HD into ProRes422 for quality’s sake.

I finally had a chance to use this method.
There was only one problem, Robert. When you export to XML version 1, you loose all of your timecode. If you export using XML version 2, it will retain the timecode and work perfectly.

The problem here is software down-conversion.
Anytime you use software to down-convert any HD video, it’s not going to look as pristine as doing hardware conversion.
Personally, I have better luck just taking the XDCAM HD file right into Roxio’s Toast and doing the one-off right from that. Most here will say that it’s not good enough and if you find that to be true for you, too. I’d say then you need to find someone who can hardware down-convert your program to a SD program that is 16×9 or letterboxed.

That’s simple…. And yes, it will take longer to render than DVCProHD.
XDCAM HD is a form of Long-GOP video, whereas, DVCProHD is I-Frame video. Long-GOP is the method that is traditionally used in HDV and XDCAM HD has borrowed this for its primary method of video. Thus, in order to be seen, the video has to conform itself to Long-GOP. Its very scientific and lengthy to explain. Do a search on the web for Long-GOP and you’ll see for yourself.
Usually, the conforming only comes when you have to output your timeline. Can you tell me what is your sequence settings that you are using?

Well… Can you output it at 24p?
Web video is not near as picky as broadcast video. Most of the movie trailers you see on the web are 24p. as long as the signal is progressive, 24 or 30 will work just fine.
Do a test and see if it works for you.

This is correct… The mistake that most make here is to down-convert in FCP. This will give you bad results. Output your program to tape in HD or see if the dub house will accept a Quicktime file.

No… That’s wrong way of doing this. You must have a capture/output card that is capable of down-conversion. Something like the Matrox MXO2 or the AJA Kona series of cards. This is the only acceptable medium for doing just this.

You have to tell the FCP7 editor that they will have to export the XML using version 4. FCP6 is not XML version 5 compatible.
