I have been using a FS100 with our HDX900 for over 2- 1/2 years. The majority of what I record is at 1080/30P and it works fine and looks great. The FS100 is set to DVCProHD and Quicktime and I edit with FCP.

We have two 22 x 14′ canvas painted, (warm textured), drops. One is kept rolled on a carpet tube and the other is suspended on chain/rollers on the cyc track in our studio. The rolled up one is used to add more floor coverage to the hanging drop. To get rid of wrinkles we have one of those hand pump chemical sprayers that I fill with warm water. I hold the canvas taught with sand bags and spray a fine mist on the back of the canvas and once it’s dry the wrinkles are gone. The canvases are seamed and were sewn professionally and they are nearly invisible. For our Wescott portable green screen we simply use a small clothes steamer to get rid of the wrinkles.I will check out that wrinkle remover spray you mentioned for when it’s not practical to work with a steamer.

The spreader on my sticks is at the ground but is flexible so it works nicely on very uneven surfaces. However, I wholeheartedly agree with Robyn that you should look for sticks with the spreader at mid-level.Mark D’Agostino

I’ve used the Vinten Vision 10 head and sticks for about 15years with a heavier Sony 500 and for the last 2-1/2 years with our HDX900 and it’s worked beautifully and is lightweight.

Hi Rob,
Take your video from the “video out” on the rear of the HDX900. On the side panel move the video out switch to “vbs” and move the “characters” switch to “on”. That’s it. We record with tc window to a Panasonic DMR E-30 dvd recorder and that has worked nicely.Mark D’Agostino

When you turn on your camera does ” Back up Batt Empty” appear in the viewfinder for a few seconds and does the TC read all zeroes? If not then it might not be the internal battery. Check that the tc item in the VTR menu under TC/UB is set to “on”. It needs to be “on” to remember the last set tc before power is turned off, (see page 130 of manual). Our camera was in for service when they replaced the battery so I don’t know how that’s done but I do know the battery, cr2032, is just a basic watch battery you can get at any Walmart type store.

An RF warning can mean dirty/clogged heads. We have a head cleaning tape that we only run when we have this issue and that has worked the very few times we’ve needed it. If the issue persists then I agree with Chris that a professional head cleaning could be in order.

If file size and storage are not a real issue I’d recommend shooting 1080 anyhow. We do this to protect for the possibility of the client wanting to reuse it for HD down the road. This could happen as local stations slowly switch to HD. On a more local level, clients to tend to reuse footage for years.

This is not a solution or suggestion but just a fun note. Years ago, in the SD days, we actually did a couple “blue”screen exteriors by using the blue sky itself as the blue screen on some low angle shots. It actually worked out.
