Thanks for this Dan! It works to scale up and then back down and adjusts with the markers as planne. I just need to figure out the balance between the offset on position and the offset on scale. Thanks for the time you put into this. Much appreciated!

The above iMac results were connecting with SMB. This screenshot is connecting with AFP. Much better read performance!

I’ve also added a new 27″ iMac QC connected with a Sonnet Solo. It was a bit more challenging to set up than the PC but I finally got it connected and tested.

I’ll post system performance updates when we get the new head end set up in a few months.

Okay, the switch isn’t the issue. Should have known better. These QNAP devices are designed for direct connection.

Big shout out to Bob for his rundown of options. It really made me back up and re-examine the hardware side of things and the process of elimination.

I’m happy to report that the QNAP is now connecting and showing read/write speeds of 615MB/s and 700MB/s respectively.

The issue at this point appears to be a conflict with the Gbit LAN connection on the iMac. When it’s plugged in, internet but no QNAP. Unplugged, the QNAP works perfectly, but no internet.

I have a little more troubleshooting to do…

Thanks Bob. Lots of great info.

I think I’ve figured out the Issue. I’m not using a switch on the 10G connections. Just connecting directly to the QNAP. No money currently in the budget for a switch so it might be better to get the Apple thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and connect the Mac that way.

I’ll have a switch at some point in the future but that’s months away.

    A little more info…

I discovered Network Utility on the Mac.

Thunderbolt Slot 1 shows the QNAP’s Aquantia 10Gbe connection is active ans some traffic. But when I ping the QNAP IP, it isn’t successful.

As I understand it, the Sonnet Solo is plug/play. Am I missing a step to getting it configured?

Thanks Bob. I actually thought about bringing you in on this but it was pretty straight forward for our application…one storage pool with caching.

I went with the 32gig version so it was $3225 for the QNAP. The rest you outlined is spot on. We were previously using a Synology Gbit NAS with a 2Gbit port bond for raw storage, using proxies on local drives and then re-linking to hi res at output. Still not a bad workflow but we have all sorts of options now depending on project timelines.

Our new head end will be fully 10Gbe and the QNAP will live there about 150′ from the edit rooms. It’s a requirement for several clients that all data pertaining to them that it be centralized, on AC backup and physically secure. I plan to add a switch on the edit room side and run 2 Cat6a home runs in a 20Gbe LAG from the main switch. Another possibility is a fiber run since the main switch has an open QSFP port that we can adapt. This would give us upward of 40Gbe in that pipeline. Either way, I like the switch on my end because as Bob mentioned. it gives us more user capacity.

In case anyone comes looking for an answer to this. It was all solved with a BIOS update. The new computer shipped with a BIOS that was 2 generations old. Go figure.

    Thanks for the reply John.

I bet more folks are having the same issue and don’t know it. It’s only noticeable on tight edits. If you have air head and tail of the cuts, it’s likely still happening, but doesb’t show itself.

Thanks for the clarification Bob. I’ll take a look at the TS-1685.
