Also Alt+page up/page down will nudge layers…add the shift key and it will nudge by 10 frames.

Sorry, I just noticed that Michael answered this same question in an earlier post.

They are easy to access. Simlpy open up the color correction, then on the right and left monitors you can choose the scopes that you want by using the pulldown menus above the monitors. It would be nice to have scopes that could be seen relatime without the need to go to color correction mode. Tektronix had a plugin that you could put on a filler above your video, but they discontinued the product. Hopefully this will be a future feature, or it exists and I have not yet found it. Premiere Pro actually has realtime scopes….

Paul,
You can also use the scopes inside of Avid…..I have tested them against our exeternal scopes and they seem to match up pretty well. the advantage to the external scopes is that they update quicker.

I use the color effect to limit my work…but i also watch my external scopes to see what is getting limited and make the necessary adjustements.
I would suggest doing some reading on color levels, video levels etc…Personally I could not put out quality work if I did not understand scopes….even things like Web work can benefit from scopes, as they can help in the color correcting procedure….and of course if you are going to TV it is a must.Regards

Drop the pan and scan filter from the reformat tab onto your clips (once they are in the sequence). Now choose 16:9 anamorphic as the original file type and 4:3 as the target…I am not sure if that is the exact terminology of the filter, but you basically have 2 pulldown boxes that enable you to choose.
Also, there is a 4:3 square that allows you to decide what part of the footage you want to show in the 4:3. I am assuming that you want to center cut your 16:9 footage.

2. If you can’t reimport etc use the filters in the reformat tab. I like the pan and scan filter, as it is easy to use and does a great job, but all of the filters have their use….that said, as Michael stated, the best way to do this is upon import or capture.

I use Sorenson Video3 in QT, but I let Sorenson squeeze do all of my compressing for QT. I usually send a reference QT out of Avid, then open that in Sorenson and let Squeeze handle the compression. If I need a WMV file, then I send an uncompressed AVI out of Avid and use the windows media encoder (free download from Microsoft). I find most NLE’s will export a decent file, but not as good as the compression programs.

I would use a combination of FRactal noise and displacement maps. The fractals will be used to create the distortion map, and the displacement map will physically shift the pixels. I would then try and use a transfer mode to put the fractal noise back over the distorted pixels. I have used this technique in the past to create a heat haze….if memory serves me, I also used a gaussian blur with a wiggle expression.
Hope this helps,
