Check the alpha channel inside AE to make sure that you are generating an alpha that matches your scene. Make sure that there are no other layers (solids) that in the comp that would affect the alpha.
Render out using millions of colors+ to make sure that your alpha is generated.

Also, if possible, try to shoot using a different format than DV. Go for something with 4:2:2 colorspace and capture with as little compression as possible.

I agree that keylight is fantastic. I also agree that it needs practice to get used to the filter. I suggest Andrew Kramer’s training DVD as a good starting point.
You can chroma key without keyers however, and I have managed to get very good results.
What I do is duplicate my footage. On the top layer use the change colour filter. Select the baskground colour, then set the filter to -view matte-. This will create a great track matte for the underlying layer. You can then use gaussian blur to soften up edges of the matte. You can also use garbage mattes to get rid of unwanted footage. It has worked for me in the past. I am not sure if these filters ship with the standard version as I have always, and will always use the production bundle/professional version.

You would have to keyframe the mask shape.

Are you properly interpolating the fields ? What are you rendering out to ??? Is your comp set up to match your footage ???? Have you moved or scaled the footage ????? So many questions need answering before your question can be answered…..sorry 🙂

Could you post an example so that we could better evaluate ??? As Dave said, this could be hard and time consuming….depends on the footage etc.

Render MPG2 out of After Effects….skip the middle man 🙂 Or, if you have the budget, get the adobe premium syudio and use the dynamic link to bring the comp into Encore (not the render but rather the project link) and let Encore do the compression for you. I use this feature a lot and really love it….better quality for sure as I am not going through multiple compressors….that said, I am not sure how you would envoke the 3:2 pulldown in Encore.

I use the levels to set a basic mix, from there I go work.
I work in sports promos, so music really drives our spots. I like to have as much music as possible. I like to create a hole in the music to allow space for the voice. I will remove a portion of the music using the EQ, then will add a little to that same frequency of the voice. This allows me to really drive the tunes. Usually the EQ frequency is around 1.5 khz (give or take).
As other have said, there is no exact rule to follow. Get yourself some good mixing speaker (nice and flat), and get a crappy speaker (tv speaker will do fine)…run your mix through both….chances are that the crappy speaker will let you know if there is too much or not enough music.

Why don’t you just create the solid layer to the size you want ??? If you are just adding a rectangular mask, then you could just skip that and create the solid to the dimensions that you require….other than that, precompose.

I don’t know about a specific plug, but you could play around with a mosaic filter and then just add the lines by either uses solids, or a strokes.
