I did not say that you should never clean it. Panasonic says heads drum should be cleaned every 500hrs drum running time but I think you can go past that depends how and where you use it.
I said that heads should be cleaned in authorized service center. If you break it cleaning it you will have to pay to replace it and void warranty. You are free to use cleaning tape but I would be careful how often you do it. Use it when you have blinking lights on the camera but not before every shoot 🙂
Sony has much more durable cylinder and heads. On the Varicam it is so much easier to break it. It is your choice. It maybe be just not worth it since you need to get that clening arm.
You can do it but you have to be very careful. I recommend using authorized service. -
I would suggest to bringing your camera to authorized service center. One reason is that those heads in Varicam are more fragile and much smaller than your DigiBeta. Accidentally breaking head will costs you $$$ ‘s to replace it.
Secondly they need to replace self cleaning arm and they can run test to see how often camera needs to use error correction.
I can tell you that because I did it for years working in camera service center and I know it is more difficult with those cameras.Mariusz

Yes, of course but this was 3 kids (A kid, B kid and C kid playing). 3 names plus “playing” and original 6 characters name is too long. When you name QT file you can drag it to browser in FCP and it will show up. It won’t show up if you try to name it in Import Panasonic P2 window.
Funny that it happened to another person day after me. I am not an editor so I am sure there will be more people wondering why some clips are not importing.
I wrote this to help those people and warn others that like detail description of their P2 clips.Mariusz

Please check if that deck can play medium size tapes from HDX900 camera. Camera records on 9 micron tracks that I think this older deck can not read.

You can call Abelcine Tech or Nivie Electronics. Both know cameras well, keep replacement parts in stock and definitely can help you.

Hi,
I would suggest to get a at least 3 8GB cards per camera and laptop for each camera so yu can manage downloading during a break. Also get a slate with TC running on a display and shoot it with cameras prior to set.

Randy,
You can stick any DVCPRO medium size tape into camcorder. Tape inside is identical except labels and lid colors that are telling you what time you get while recording in that format. HDX900 is recording on 9microns tracks so you get 1/2 time what yellow lid DVCPRO tape is telling you.
Sorry, it is litlle confusing but as I said any medium size tape will work fine.Mariusz

Hi,
You could use HDX900 or HVX200 P2 camera to shoot 1080p. Both cameras have 1080p option but it is limited to 1080×1280 DVCPROHD codec. Material that is shoot in 24p frame rate will be embedded in 1080/60i with pulldown that you can remove when capturing on computer. You can upconvert 720/24p to 1080/24p from tape on Panasonic 1700 series deck through HD SDI and record on another 1080p deck.
I hope this helps,Mariusz

It is possible to delete pixel compensation but I would definitely agree that large HD monitor and expertise is needed when performing task. I would first do black balance few times to see if this will help. If black balance trick doesn’t do it, take camera to rental house, service center and qualified technician can do it for you.
Camera needs to be “warmed up” for about 2 hrs and whole procedure shouldn’t take more than an hour.
I hope this helps.Mariusz

If you thinking about doing lot of variable frame rate effects it will be better for you to do it in camera than in post. This is what will be looking better than done in post.
As far as quality 1080 is slightly better but not much, (720×960) or (1080×1280) compressed by DVCPRO HD codec. You will get more flexibility to shoot slo-mo with 720p (always progressive) and also you will be able to record longer time on cards.Mariusz
