  • DVCPro HD tape?

I am renting a Panasonic HDX900 to shoot HD.
I was told that I could use a standard DVCPro tape to record on.
    PANASONIC AJ-P66MP
Is this correct? I don’t need to buy the High Priced Red HD tapes?

    Randy,

Be careful; the HDX takes the medium sized tapes as opposed to the large size for the Varicam. The tape you cited is correct, and FYI the yellow label 126 minute is the best choice pricewise for the Varicam and incidently is the same tape inside as the red or blue!

    Thanks,
I just figured out when shooting HD, I will only get 16 minutes recording time from a AJ-P66MP tape.
I don’t think the 126 is a Medium cassette is it? I need it to fit in the HDX900 which uses a Medium cassette. If they make a medium size that is definitly what I want to get. Who is the best source for tape, if I am allowed to ask that question?
On the HDX900 spec sheet it mentions this tape “AJ-HP33EMG “.
That will allow for 33 min HD recording. But I have only been able to find it in Canada.

I buy all my video tape by internet at:

    tapestockonline.com

They have every brand, the best prices and ship same day as ordered!

    If I’m allowed to say!

    Randy,

You can stick any DVCPRO medium size tape into camcorder. Tape inside is identical except labels and lid colors that are telling you what time you get while recording in that format. HDX900 is recording on 9microns tracks so you get 1/2 time what yellow lid DVCPRO tape is telling you.
Sorry, it is litlle confusing but as I said any medium size tape will work fine.

Mariusz makes an important point that some people find confusing. If both the Varicam and HDX900 camera could take the same tapestock, you would be able to record twice as much information on the HDX900 since it essentially records the same amount of information on half the space. The Varicam has been out long enough for everyone to know that when using the yellow 126 tapes, divide that number by 4 to get the amount of Varicam footage you can fit on it… aprox 32 minutes.

The 9 micron track pitch on the HDX900, like the 3 decks most often used (1700, 1200A and 1400), allow you to record twice as much footage on the tape as you can on the Varicam. That same 126 tape would give you 63 minutes of recording time if used in a 1200A, for example.

Bottom line, the tape you mentioned, the AJ-P66MP, will give you 33 minutes of recording time on the HDX900, not 16.
