DVC ProHD shot at 720p -> 1080i
Posted by Eli Tishberg on January 17, 2007 at 10:23 pmHi all,
I am going to be doing a job in a few weeks that will be shooting on Sony HDCAM (1080p/23.98) and also want to shoot using Panasonic DVCPro HD. I am assuming that the DVCProHD does NOT do 1080p/23.98 but rather does 720p/23.98. Is this correct? Is there a Panasonic Deck that will do the transcode (720p ->1080p) on the fly?
If so, can the DVCProHD make 1080i/59.97 out of the 720p/23.98 tapes on the fly?
Thanks
for all your help…

January 18, 2007 at 2:44 amHi,
You could use HDX900 or HVX200 P2 camera to shoot 1080p. Both cameras have 1080p option but it is limited to 1080×1280 DVCPROHD codec. Material that is shoot in 24p frame rate will be embedded in 1080/60i with pulldown that you can remove when capturing on computer. You can upconvert 720/24p to 1080/24p from tape on Panasonic 1700 series deck through HD SDI and record on another 1080p deck.
I hope this helps,Mariusz

January 18, 2007 at 3:25 amThanks for the quick response. I thought this could be done but wasn’t sure what machine to use.
The original idea was to use the HVX200 to shoot 720p/23 but the offline is being cut on an older avid which doesn’t support P@ media.
This way they can record 720p/23, using the 1700 deck, they can downconvert to standard def/29.97 on the fly while loading the avid. Then when they are done and send me the project I can reload at HD 1080i/29.97 from the 720p tapes and the 1080p/23 HDCAMs. Everything will be in sync and frame accurate. Thanks again…

The DVCPROHD codec works with both 720p and 1080 footage at all of the standard frame rates found in HD ( and some not so standard)
To get that content into your FCP edit systems you will need a Aja Kona card that will allow you to capture via HDSDI in the DVCPROHD codec directly from your HDcam deck into final cut pro. This will allow you to go back later for a frame accurate “online” of the 1080 23.98PsF content should it ever be needed.

I am not using FCP but rather an Avid Nitris. As long as I can get the media out of the 1700 deck transcoded to 1080i/59.97 thats all I need. That way I can do the offline in 30 frame and load all the HDCAM and DVC ProHD as 30 frame footage and all will be well. Thanks for all your help, I am not really as familiar with the Panasonic product line as I am with the HDCAM stuff.
Thanks again…

eli, my apologies,
when people say they want to work in DVCPROHD I assume fcp– as Avids for the most part want to convert to DnxHD.[etishberg] “As long as I can get the media out of the 1700 deck transcoded to 1080i/59.97 thats all I need. Correct the 1700 deck can cross convert 720 footage to 1080 59.94 – which your Nitris should see as 1080 29.97.
As a matter of course the Panny HD decks will do this when configured properly. The 1200 and 1700 decks need the HDSDI options- the 1400 has that ability out of the box. I do not know about the earlier models

January 20, 2007 at 8:56 pmThe HD150 deck with the up/down converter card will also convert 720p to 1080i on the fly. It’s menu setting #631.

January 21, 2007 at 4:09 amPlease check if that deck can play medium size tapes from HDX900 camera. Camera records on 9 micron tracks that I think this older deck can not read.
