If you had the budget, would you recommend tape drives? LTO?

Having 2 HMC150 cameras on hand is pretty much an advantage if your final output would be DVDs. But if you’re concerned about picture quality and looking further beyond the future of HD, then the EX is the choice.

March 17, 2010 at 6:21 am in reply to: AVCHD vs. XDCAM : workflow & quality comparisonIt really depends if you really need two cameras. Because obviously the EX1R is way superior to the HMC150. And if I were to choose from these 2 cameras, I’d get the EX1R. I’m an owner of both EX1 and EX3 cameras and I have been satisfied with its performance. Because the expandability options are limitless. The EX1R I believe can output 10bit 4:2:2 uncompressed HD images through the SDI out. Therefore when the time comes that you have enough budget to buy a CD Nanoflash, it upgrades your camera to a much higher level. If you have enough budget, I suggest you get the EX3. When it comes to post workflow, I haven’t used vegas but I think that the EX series has been friendly to the post environment. I’ve used both FCP and Avid on this camera and the workflow is pretty much easy to handle. I’ve posted a thread comparing a P2 and an EX, and as far as my research has taken me, the Sony EX cameras are still my preference.

Thanks guys for that argument. As an owner of both EX1 and EX3, they’re true HD cameras. In fact the EX3 can output 10bit 4:2:2 HD through the SDI output therefore giving out much superior quality to the HVX500. Sony EX cameras are 4:2:0 when it records through its internal SXS. However when used with an external recorder through the SDI-out, as I said, it can generate a 10bit 4:2:2 HD image.
We use the Nanoflash which can record at a maximum of 8bit 4:2:2 280mbps HD recording. Sony also has the NIPROS/1 (https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-broadcastcameras/cat-xdcam/product-NIPROS%2F1/) which is designed to be for broadcast use. So I therefore conclude that the EX3 is a true HD camera.Mario Biennarc Sioco

Thank you very much for your facts and insights. Here’s another question, how would you compare the CCD and CMOS of the 2 cameras? This has been the point of comparison when I defend myself in buying the EX3 instead of the P2. Does the HVX500 do better on low light conditions? Is there really a big advantage to with the P2’s CCD? Does it greatly affect the uncompressed SDI output of either camera?

Thanks guys for the quick response. It really helped us in broadening and comparing our options.
We settled for the HawkwoodsBPEX3 since we have 4 BP-U60s and 2 BP-U30s.Mario Biennarc Sioco

If you have budget to spare ($199), get ProxyMill by Imagine Products. It’s how we give clients to preview raw footage from XDCAM footage with TC burn.

It’s the clip itself that is locked. I checked all the project bins and made sure that there are no .lck files. I also tried right clicking and removing the read only attributes. But when I click it again, the read only attributes become checked again. 🙁 Too bad I have other projects in the AvidMediafiles folder so I can’t just format the drive. Any other solutions?

Thanks. I was trying to relink the clips inside the bin. I never thought that it was just a matter of relinking it with the link to AMA menu. Thank you very much.
