Thanks for your help. I do Time Machine backups. I will be sure to do one just prior to install.

Assuming that your son’s MBP is Thunderbolt equipped, consider one of the external expansion enclosures from Sonnet that allow adding PCI cards to MacBook Pros, iMacs and Mac Minis.

Also consider Matrox’s MX02 line, AJA io, MOTU V4HD, and similar devices from Black Magic Design.

Chris, if RED better suits your needs as opposed to Media 100 Suite, then I think that you will be very happy with RED and all of the tutorials on the Boris FX site. You will learn from all of the tutorials regardless of the NLE host that is featured in a particular lesson.

The BCC plug-in suite and RED share a lot of functionality, so even viewing the BCC tutorials will be of great benefit to you.

One of the reasons that I went for Media 100 is because it’s bundled with RED so I understand your “affection” for RED.

Hi Dave, with the new Media 100 Motion Editor you should be able to do some DVE tricks with text and clips right from the Media 100 timeline; it should not be necessary to engage RED as much as with past M100 versions.

Boris RED v5 is the latest version and that is what ships with Media 100 Suite v2 and you can open that same Boris RED as a standalone application without opening Media 100.

RED does indeed work as a plug-in for the other editors you mentioned. My guess is that if you bought Media 100 Suite and you want RED to also work as a plug-in in other NLEs you might have to buy RED for those specific NLEs. I don’t know that for sure so check with Boris FX.

But anything that you work up in RED when you use it as a standlone app, you can certainly export to other editors via Quicktime, etc.

If you have the time, check out the 14 day trial. Since M100 supports 99 video tracks you aren’t locked in to using the A/B track transition operation. That is one feature about M100 I am not crazy about, so I am able to get around using it pretty much all of the time.

I almost never use the A/B track transitions that you to which you refer. There are other ways, especially since M100 now supports 99 video tracks.

You are actually making the case for me. As you stated, you have two NLEs, FCP and Avid, so in that case you are not dependant on one manufacturer/supplier. That’s is what is meant by having two “systems”.

Sorry about the double post. No I am not a Boris employee or reseller. I do not receive any compensation.

Regarding the upgrade and support cost, I agree that they are “up there” but I have never paid for tech support. The Media 100 COW forum appears to be the official support conduit for M100 and it seems that everyone gets their questions answered there, free of charge. I have even emailed tech support and gotten help at no charge.

If you are interested in M100 I would encourage you to contact Boris FX and let them know that the upgrade prices and support prices are preventing you from making a purchase. If enough folks holler, maybe the prices will drop.
