Michael, becoming a 64-bit application would allow Media 100 to access more memory which should be useful in running very complex projects. Secondly, becoming fully 64-bit allows M100 to run on macOS released beyond Mojave. Mojave is the last macOS that will allow 32-bit applications to operate. Third, to run on any macOS beyond Mojave, M100 will have to employ newer technologies. The M100 Quicktime structure will have to be abandoned, replaced by AV Foundation or whatever, meaning that M100 takes advantage of the benefits of the newer structure, whatever they might be.

Will the shift to 64-bit mean better quality images? I don’t know, but it should mean that M100 can handle 8k images and beyond, and, possibly, run faster and be more responsive.

  • Dave, you should ask Boris to just left you have Media 100 free and clear and see what you can do to modernize it.

I bet that you have a list of improvements and new features you want to implement and there’s probably no one better to do it than you.

Yes, I know that it takes 10s of thousands of dollars to make it a 64 bit program, but somehow, I think that you could find backing and interest that others simply have not been able to achieve.

Tim, I wonder how you came out on this project and if you were able to use M100 do do what you wanted.

Another option might have been to load the clip into Quicktime Player (or Pro) first and use Quicktime’s ability to edit/trim and save out the portions that you needed.

BTW, joseph, a lot of us are on the Media 100 Facebook page. You’ll most likely get faster responses by posting there.

If you are not sure, just send a sample of the project (small section) to the colorist, following the instructions Andrew gave. Just explain to the colorist that this is for testing purposes and to insure that you can supply what he is asking for.

As far as not sending text, you could duplicate the project to a new program (save with a different name), delete the text tracks and send that program to the colorist. then simply match it up with a new duplicated program that has the text and graphics from the original but not the “body” and simply slide in the color corrected version.

This may not be case of Media 100 being better, but rather as an additional tool in your arsenal. Many users just flat out love the interface. Some will start projects in Premiere and finish them in Media 100. Sometimes, it’s the other way around. Some like the ability to easily send a project to After Effects. I am big fan of the integrated Boris RED. Something that might be considered a negative can be a plus; M100 is not as feature-rich as some other NLEs but that leads to a less cluttered interface, which some users enjoy.

Another observation is that many people have a picture in their minds of Media 100 prior to 2004. While development has lagged in the last few years, the capabilities of the current version would please former users who used it from the mid-90s to early 2000s.

Should you download and give it a try? Up to you. It’s free, easy to use and if you don’t like it, delete it.

Hi, Carl. If you have a question pertaining to FCP, you should post in the appropriate forum for that NLE. This is the Media 100 forum, relating to the NLE that goes by that name. I’m sure that folks in the FCP forum(s) can help with your question.

BTW, if you would like to know more about Media 100 Suite, visit https://www.media100.com and download the 60 day trial.

  • May I suggest trying to do the same process in the free Mpeg Streamclip to see if you get different results? If so, perhaps that will help you troubleshoot the problem in Media 100. Maybe.
