Thanks for the post. This process won’t turn of the other Davinci assigned buttons on the wave panel – Is this right? So re-assigning already taken up keys will result in triggering your new macro and triggering what was already assigned in Davinci?

Black Magic are fully aware of this latency as first demonstrated by Michael Cinquin here https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/277/2950 . So currently Black Magic’s Resolve on the Mac is not a real time grading solution. The “Real Time By Design” slogan on the website “refers to “real time” playback, but not “real time” grading. I’ll leave that for you to determine if the difference is misleading or intellectually dishonest.

In the mean time there are some tricks that you can do to get your latency down. If you are working in 1080 or higher, when grading set your timeline and video out to 720P. This should reduce it by 30-50%. When you have a client preview or render, just set it back. Davinci will keep all shapes intact.

Thanks for responding. I read your post ages ago an remembered it incorrectly. I thought you were referring to playback and now I realise you were addressing grading as well.

The word from Black Magic is that you should expect 6-7 fps latency whilst grading on the Mac. This is a world of time for professional video applications. On long form it can add up to hours of delay for a single project, not to mention frustration for a fast operator. Even Apple Color can be made to be significantly less.

My final bit of investigation is to find out whether the Linux systems have similar latency. If they do, Black Magic’s “real time by design” slogan is misleading. We bought many systems based on this promise only to find out the opposite.

Have you worked on a Linux system and noticed any Latency?

Hi Robert,

Re-installing your Davinci from the CD is the way to go to get back the old decklink drivers. This won’t erase your projects as that’s handled by the Postgresql database independently.

But just to clarify – are you not getting any noticeable latency whilst grading in 1080 with just one node and UC QT? I’m currently trying to work this through with Black Magic, and although the details aren’t fully confirmed yet – it seems as if they are suggesting that there in an inherit latency in the design of the Mac system. I am so surprised to hear this that I’m very curious if anyone else has noticed it. I mean, it should be really obvious! But I know a lot of people have come from Apple Color and may be used to grading with latency, and so have not reported it.

So are you all saying that you have no noticeable latency whilst grading QTs in 1080? I’m assuming you are running 30fps?

For example, when you change the gain of a shot, whether it be on the UI or a tangent, the video out monitor jumps to attention. There is no lag at all.

Have you converted them into TIFFs?

Davinci seems to like TIFFs only. They also will need to be renamed so that they have a number on the end like:

SHOT_A_01.tif etc.

Be careful not to put two different shots with the same prefix otherwise davinci will group them. You can batch modify all the shots in photoshop to be in the correct format and then use a renaming program to get it in the ballpark. Time consuming, but should work.
