Thanks very much for the help everyone. I had a sneaking suspicion it would be difficult. I’ll see what results toying around gets me.

Thanks for the quick response, but I was looking for a little more than ‘yes’.

    Mike,
Most of the newer cams have larger HDDs (I have the SR-12 Sony that has a 120GB). Some are also Hybrid, where you could record on a memory stick (the SR-12 supports a MemStick Pro Duo up to 8GB)

I make it a regular habit to backup to another HDD in case I need to free some room (and it’s just good to back this up anyway).

Thanks much, Vincent. That’s what I figured.

So why would Sony create this codec if you only have to convert it for mainstream playback anyway? I mean, I realize it makes smaller file sizes without loss of quality for HDD based cams, but I guess I’m still wondering what other benefit there is to this (at least until 2015 when most people have a Blu-Ray player).

You didn’t mention whether you’re on a PC or Mac; but for Mac, I use an app called Voltaic (it’s available for PC as well)

For $30 it does a very nice job at converting AVCHD files (for me anyway). I convert them to the iMovie format and they drop right into Premiere Pro. I haven’t noticed a drop in quality either. I usually like to convert to 720p, not 1080i.

Thanks, Mike. I’ve decided I might switch to the AVCHD format with a HDD (Sony HDR-SR12); same thing here? (I ask because you specifically mentioned the AVCHD format in your post vs. HDV)

    Thanks!
