Getting HD content on a standard DVD-CS4

Basically, yes and no. You can burn on standard DVDs using an HD burner, but your DVDs probably will only play on the likes of the Playstation 3. Things do change and I haven’t looked into it for a while. There are also a select few DVD players that will play WMV HD from standard DVDs.

I haven’t tried it, but a possibility could be to create a disc image from Encore (or PPro CS4 if it lets you), and copy that to a DVD. But I don’t know if a blue-ray image is the same format as DVD-video (*.iso).

Update– I just took a peek at Encore CS3, and a blu-ray project will only let you output a BD disc images. So much for my bright idea… Which doesn’t seem so bright anymore.

Of course, maybe you could still burn a BD disc image to a DVD. As to whether it would play back- see Vince’s answer.

I seem to have been able to do this by rendering in PPCS4 with the H264-bluray format and selecting the HDTV 1080p 23.976 high quality preset and then creating a DVD in Encore. This will then play in my Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player and appears to be properly formated and in high def.
