Downloaded “virtualdub” & deshaker; they do work better than the included sony software, so now I’m doing this effect off the timeline, could not get Sony’s product to work within a project, though it worked when I set one clip in a new instance of VP11, weird.
Considering JR’s post about copyprotection and ProDad, I’ll continue learning how to best use deshaker and see how it goes.

I just tried “stabilize” and it was ineffective, I preferred my original footage, even shaky compared to the heavy crop and lack of useful stabilization. Pro Dad 2 at $250 is a bit steep. Any other solutions?

Just got VP 11 up and running, quite amazing! put two clips on the timeline, same clip. One out of my canon 7d-h.264 raw and the other was a Cineform Neoscene medium conversion.
VP11 plays them both, no choking, at full resolution! I set my preview up to maximum and the files play back great, unbelievable.
I have not applied any effects, I would expect that to slow things down a bit, but compared to the playback performance under 9e, with the exact same computer system, graphics card, etc. an amazing improvement.
Will I still use Neoscene? It is no longer mandatory to just edit, I will have to do some tests to see if grading performance improves by converting the camera original to a 4:2:2 environment. I’ll post again when I conduct some tests.

The Zoom H1 can be used as a body pack for each person, with a “cheap” lav it’s under $150 each, or go with the Zoom R16 with 8 inputs which you can mix later $400, there are naturally more expensive multi track recorders, but if you don’t need the high quality then this may work. When “working alone” I always put each subject on their own track so I don’t have to ride levels while shooting. Today it’s cheaper than ever to to this. I use a Zoom H4, H1 and will be purchasing a few more H1’s rather than more wireless units in the near future.

Yes, for a year, works great with VP9, I’m soon upgrading to VP11, hopefully it will work with the upgrade or perhaps I will not need it. I’ll soon see.

If they (the other company) are making money, make sure you make money as well. If they are doing it for free, then charge your costs to provide the material, but no “rights” to any of the footage.

Even a “cheap” zoom, non-constant aperture, is a “constant aperture” after f4.0 or so. On the lens specs you will see f3.5~4 or 3.5~56, well just set your aperture to the smaller setting and your lens will be “constant aperture.” Add light or increase the gain setting on the camera, you can now zoom in without the scene darkening during zooming.
If you are looking for the “shallow depth of field” look, you have to use primes (fast) or expensive zooms with a “constant aperture” of f2.8. Primes will almost always give you shallower depth, but zooms are more convenient ( I use them almost always for my work)though it depends on your work as to what is best.

I also notice that I am able to save markers in the trimmer with .avi files but NOT .mov files? is this normal? Still can’t print them out from the trimmer.

I found that technique works in the timeline but not in the trimmer or in the media bin.
