Why are you using the Creative Cow?

This is a place where professionals like to help other professionals, and those who aspire to become a professional, and as you know, everybody else.

You stating “I must clarify that it is cracked” is offensive.
When you previously posted about a cracked version, I did not believe that anyone would be stupid enough to say that out loud. In a place amongst people who pay for the tools that they make an honest living out of.

Apparently I was wrong.

Adding, that when people have helped you in the past, you have not taken the time to say “thank you”, but only when getting stuck, you have asked for more advice.

Do not get me wrong, there is currently no love lost between me and Adobe. Personally, I think that they have turned themselves into everything they promised not to be become. Their C-Suite has run out of ideas, and their CEO should pack their bags and let a new leader take the reins.

But I can not justify theft in any shape or form. For a burglar to show up on Creative Cow and ask fee paying users to provide a “crow-bar” for their business of dishonesty, is an affront to decency and hard-working people.

Dare we even ask whether you paid for your Mac terminal, or was that too was from a place of stolen goods?

What is really stupid on your part, and it is with the best intensions that I use “stupid” as that can be the only explanation. Is that you never had to steal anything in the first place, as some of the best software out there is ready for you to use for free:

Hey Ian,

For questions about storage, this is the place to be. IMHO.

But if you look at storage, that is a minefield too, and you might want to call in a dedicated engineer who can look over the hardware, as well as the software from workstation to storage, and back again.

If there were no problems on v23, Adobe should be your first port of call.

I often find that Adobe hangs on export, and then come back to life as long as I don’t “touch” it.
There is the added opportunity on transcribing all rushes on import, which I use – something as simple as that could be your problem?
As in PPro might decide to transcribe all the media on your Synology.

Who knows what goes through the mind of that company…?

Are you on Windows 10 or 11?

I am currently dealing with a vendor where it is a choice of disabbling all security features and/or running third party antivirus software.

I am leaning towards HP Wolf security software getting in the way.

As you suggest, it might just be a box that needs to be ticked.

But finding that one box or software…

Hey Ian,

Can’t hurt running an overnight scan on the drives, can it?

Adobe is known for making each new version of PPro (and other software) work worse than the previous. I have one industry colleague where they dispatched PPro and replaced it with Davinci.
They haven’t looked back as there is less crashes, faster work-flow and a one off payment.

However, although I have both, I have not killed off PPro yet as all my plug-ins are tied into Adobe – until I upgrade them next time around.

Maybe rolling back to 2023 will work.
Certainly in 2024 Adobe will max out my 128GB Ram on even the simpelst of projects when exporting.

On project size, I prefer mine to max out around the 30MB in size – that is just an old habit that I’ve stuck to.

Hey Ian,

I had a nightmare last night, literally not 😀

However, some years back, not too long ago, but long enough for me to happily forget about it.
It is an odd issue, but could apply to you.

I was freelancing for a British Broadcaster.
In the department, that was turning out 3-5 1/2 hour magazine style programs a week + social media clips, international versioning and the rest across 6-8 Apple work-stations and “desk-tops” running FCPX.

We had a shared storage of about 80Tb; I think.

I was working in the building next door, and found my Mac beach-balling more than I would have thought that it should.

Discussed with engineering whether being outside the building impacted speed?
They kindly diagrammed it for me and told me that was no delays.
After a bit of investigation (casually asking around, by the engineers – they are amongst the best), it turned out that all the suites were beach-balling.

This system was not that old, but the software was old enough not to spew out alarms if a drive was on the blink. On scanning the storage, it was found that a drive needed to be replaced.

Then there was a software update…

The software update had a big button saying “press me” for optimizing your something, something. With hindsight, it was like the big red button that Homer Simpson would find in the control room of the Nuclear Power Station saying “PRESS ME”…

It disconnected everything – try watching each editing suite in turn falling over like a row of dominoes, the day before broadcast of 3 of the shows…

Although I touched nothing, I still felt guilty.
Another hour of productivity was added because editors stopped looking at the beach ball. That got me the highest disapproval rating ever…

Just saying it, in case it is something similar happening for you.

Hey Carlo,

As I come from a generation of cameras and VTRs using video heads, I thought that you were looking to replace the heads inside your camera.

Obviously not.

You’ll need either a mono-pod for the camera, or a cage that will allow you to extend support outwards under the lens.

I have looked at Smallrig for my own Canon camera, but haven’t needed it yet.
However, on their front page, third row down, they show a solution where they mount the lens, and not the camera to the tripod:

If that doesn’t work for you, look at a cage that can be assembled with extras to support both the camera and the 600mm lens. If you ask them nicely, Smallrig might even want to design something for wildlife photographers in return for some colourful pictures on their website.

I’m not a fan of Amazon, but you can find manufacturers that does small, weird and wonderful.
Although, you might not want to trust $4K of kit to balance on a $39 attachement…

Are you on PC or Mac?

I have found at times that my PC is a bit slow, or don’t quite know what it is doing.
And, that my file ends up in a different place, which I then put down to my own impatience and finger trouble – but agree with Dennis, that Adobe wants you to use their new workflow, rather than getting started with the edit.

Hey Neil,

I had a job last week, although in Premiere Pro, where we had to go back to the original file, pre-pdf conversion. Because the pdf came out looking lower resolution.

Are you able to get hold of the original?
