    Hi:

Now a month in, finally I’ve got a handle at 90% of the settings and applications for the camera. My problem now is a different one: the video head. I’ve had a Nitro N8 for the last 7 year and it worked decently for lenses up to 400mm (m43), not perfect as my old Libec or Sachtler way back. The 200-600 is in another league, when you pass the threshold of 400mm you can not but do a fixed shot and let the animals do the work, do not even breath nearby. The Libec had 100mm bowl and lasted for 10 years and I put on there a DVCam (1/2 inch) with lenses up to 600mm (3000mm+ in 35mm equiv).

I am looking now for a head (flat, have carbon fiber legs) to work decently with the 200-600mm on far birds or near ones moving. I am retired now and can not spend but around 1000-1500$, used would be great.

    Any advise is welcome. Thanks

    Hey Carlo,

As I come from a generation of cameras and VTRs using video heads, I thought that you were looking to replace the heads inside your camera.

    Obviously not.

You’ll need either a mono-pod for the camera, or a cage that will allow you to extend support outwards under the lens.

I have looked at Smallrig for my own Canon camera, but haven’t needed it yet.
However, on their front page, third row down, they show a solution where they mount the lens, and not the camera to the tripod:
    https://www.smallrig.com/

If that doesn’t work for you, look at a cage that can be assembled with extras to support both the camera and the 600mm lens. If you ask them nicely, Smallrig might even want to design something for wildlife photographers in return for some colourful pictures on their website.

I’m not a fan of Amazon, but you can find manufacturers that does small, weird and wonderful.
Although, you might not want to trust $4K of kit to balance on a $39 attachement…

    Hope that this helps?
