You didn’t mention what the end project was for? i.e. online, ppt or digital cinema etc?

Assuming that you don’t want to compress the footage to mp4 or WMV?

Depending on what camera you are using and editing kit, you should be able to use proxies delivered by internet and then have the main files delivered by courier.

Alternative is a “play-out” via satellite or line delivery – which is very expensive. Poor man version is to play the video out via a high-end video conferencing suite – some of the financial institutions has the equipment and bandwidth to make that happen, if you can get past the IT security gateway…

Hey Al,

Your question is a recipe for disaster. A lawyer is normally the best place to start for contract work.

Alternative, a cheaper but not as secure way, is you writing to the client what you’ve agreed to do and what they are paying you for the work. Get them to insert that text on their letter headed Purchase Order and get it signed.

Interesting point that you made about scrutinizing every frame. How do you deal with location work where large crowds are involved and some degree of background music? Do you avoid them or cut around any “offending” material?

@Joseph, neither the words promotion or commercial was used by Graham. Neither were whether this was a paid for job or a freebie.

@Noah, I am suspecting that neither you or me have watched the video in question? So before making assumptions about “someone” and what they know or don’t know, how about you doing your homework first…?

@Graham, ultimately it is about who pays for and clears the PRS (Public Rights). If Beatles, Elvis or Michael Jackson or anyone else was playing in the background of you filming in a public place, then this is always going to be difficult to cut out, also known as Incidental inclusion:
“This is where part of a work is unintentionally included. A typical examples of this would be a case where holiday movie inadvertently captured part of a copyright work, such as some background music, or a poster that just happened to on a wall in the background.”

Do watch out for who pays your bills for the video and how you are crediting the contributors. Ultimately remember that it is normally not in the artists interest not to get heard and/or seen. Neither is not getting paid for it.

This is an interesting subject. If the music were played in public, and that the filming was a documentary of what was happening, rather than a music promo for the “band” playing, then under the fair usage guidelines it should be OK to use it. What is likely to be the problem, is that Youtube are not paying PRS fees.

Have you thought about using another on-line video service such as Vimeo or Facebook?

If the happy can afford the expense, you could also bring a boom operator or wire the mic down from the ceiling.

Gaffa tape on the back or attach it to the knickers. If there are none of those around, get a hand held wireless microphone that she can use – Sennheiser has a couple that can work with the same receivers that the lapel mics are using.

Hey Joe,

With regards to AVI codec and future proofing your files it really depends on what kind of work you are expecting to use the footage in?

I’m currently converting all of our old VHS’s to MPeg-2 through a very basic set-up using a home DVD recorder – unbeatable in cost of storage and can easily be copied onto other digital media storage and used in PPro.

Your comments about mini-DV and DV-CAM is interesting as in that our company is currently copying the whole Betacam SP library onto DV-Cam. In our estimate those formats still have a 10 year life-span in them. So not sure that you should write them off yet, unless there is other reasons to get them stored on a hard-drive?

Please note that none of our solutions involves Hard-Drive storage, simply because the technology is expensive per minute stored and not as durable as the other media.
