    Hey Bruno,

Not sure how good it is to cross-post across forums. However, do listen to Shane’s idea of using Go-Pro or similar. Same goes for not hurting the subject that the surgery is performed on – do not hurt them!!! More importantly, make sure that you are insured and that the insurance company is happy to cover you for that kind of production.

    Otherwise:
Take directions from the surgeon – maybe story-board your shots before going in, so everybody in the room knows what you’re doing. Blood and human beings wait for no-one.
Make sure that the kit (and you) are as sterile as possible – would be bad if the patient went and died due to an post-operative infection.
Consider the use of multiple cameras in fixed positions. Depending on the height to the ceiling, I can’t see how the Glidecam is going to work without getting in the way of the surgeon? Also, it is a big box to to make sterile.
Have you considered using macro? Nothing like the CSI shot of the surgeons knife cutting into the body – or maybe not.

And finally, if you haven’t already read it: Mike Cohen has done some excellent work and articles on surgery video production. You can find them here on the COW https://magazine.creativecow.net/article/surgical-video-the-cutting-edge

If you haven’t done it before, maybe hire an expert to go with you in on the first job.

    Good Luck

May 6, 2012 at 9:30 am in reply to: Advice on chroma key editing software

    Hey Zara,

When it comes to good Chroma Keying, the secret is in the lighting of the subject. Make sure that your background is evenly well lit and that you have a back light on the subject too. If you get this right, you should be able to use just about any piece of editing software with Chroma key build in.

In regards to software to use, it really depends on your hard-ware platform and whether you need to do the turn-around in real time?

Avid is very aggressively priced for people who want to move from FCP.
Adobe Studio with Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects is very good too – but Adobe still doesn’t seem to want to pleasure the mind of an editor + price is not matching the competition.
Lightworks is about to re-release – I like their $60/year very much + I’ve done some of my most memorable edits on the old Lightworks.
Check out Avid and Pinnacle studio too – can’t remember if they do Chroma key, but they’re certainly a cost effective way of getting into PC editing.

  • Hey Dan,

A simple Digital Signage software solution should be able to do what you want, or as we did for one of our clients, programme it all together in flash.

April 12, 2012 at 10:55 am in reply to: field production switchers

    Hey Carolyn,

    That is a wide question:
Are you going to be doing web, corporate, broadcast or all of those productions?
What camera feeds are you using? (Composite, S-Video, SDI, HD-SDI)
More importantly, how many cameras will you be using?
Will you be doing virtual studio and/or stereoscopic production?
How portable do you want it to be? (flight-case, van or truck)

Then you need to consider audio, sync and talk-back.

Hope this helps you in making your decision?

    Mark, you are such a spoil-sport 🙂

However, there will soon be an Apple app for doing all of that + randomly creating the video in a photo realistic 3D environment where you can re-invent your whole family if you don’t like the look and feel of the current one – in fact, you won’t ever need to touch or interact with the real world again – E? Wall-E?? 😉

    Hey Dave,

[Dave Po] “I respectfully disagree with @Mads. I have seen first hand how proper website SEO can help a video freelancer.”

With all due respect; you are trying to make a sell so you are not impartial, are you? However, if you can guarantee to put someone at the top ten of Google and keep them there for $50/month, then please sign me up as a client too – but I will not accept silly search terms such as “Video Production Gray’s Inn Road London near the corner of restaurant serving beef on Sunday mornings between 6 and 7 am only” 😉

As I also said “incompetence only gets you to nowhere” and you are clearly smart enough in doing your own SEO rather than paying someone for it – so well done you for your success with that. But this thread started with Nick wanting to pay cheap money for potentially a lot of work, which could easily be substituted by using Social Media through sites such as Youtube and Facebook.

    Hey Bob,

You should consider starting this post on the Cow’s Social Media forum.

I’m in no doubt that Augmented Reality will take off big time (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_reality) There is number of London universities already making progress in R&D in this arena.

And with the increase in mobile phone power/usability/apps it will be easier to automate these functions + make it easier for the likes of Groupon to connect you with a local trades person that has just what you don’t need at a cheap price.

In your example there will need to be some kind of face and/or place-recognition tool working at high speed. Whether we want Google and Facebook to know who we are and place us with our branded jeans and drinks in the wrong adverts, is another matter. But when thugs, burglars and terrorists can start using the technology to trace us with (whether we are at home or not) that is the time to start getting scared about these technologies – until then, enjoy 🙂

Have you spoken with the great team at Imagineer Systems? John-Paul Smith (CEO) should be your first stop – they IMHO invented tracking and recoignition as we know it today…

    Hey Nick,

With all due respect; incompetence only gets you to nowhere.

You can easily spend $50/month, but it is cheaper and more time effective to go down to the local street corner and shout “FREE $1 BILLS!!!”.

Why do you want to get your website noticed?
What are you offering people visiting?
And what kind of return on investment are you looking for?
I.e. if your turnover is $50,000 pa, then you could easily spend $4,000 just on marketing and advertising.

This money might be used better in a split between face-2-face networking groups and an intern/agency doing Social Media Networking for you.

There are far too many services that offers to put you top of Google, without being able to guarantee a satisfactory delivery. Like any other “display add” campaign, it is really about how much money you can afford to spend on getting to the top – and as Fernando said, if you want cheap, you get cheap.

Your original question could possibly be better answered over on the Cow’s Social Media forum 🙂
