You would think so, because I think I have FCP 5 at work and have worked on files from work on my home computer when I was using FCP 6.

When I try to open the file from FCP, I cannot even click on the file to open it. I’ve attached a pic of the folder.

When I double click on the file to open it into FCP, I get an error box, also attached as a jpg.

Argh I forgot to upload the images.

Actually, it never asked me that, and it normally does. I was surprised.

I should also mention that the quality was very low even when I wasn’t zoomed in – it was blurry even when zoomed all the way out (except for those .mov files that I mentioned,) which is what made everything so confusing.

At least I got around it, even if it doesn’t solve the problem of avi to mov. I have another project right now that also involve avi screen captures, but I don’t have to do any movement, and the client is okay with the quality loss because there’s nothing that you have to read in fine print …

I did try exporting it, it looked the same. I did set the timeline to the same aspect ratio as the original clips (and I even tried doing lots of different settings) because they needed a lot of panning and movement – the problem occurred when trying to zoom in. What is strange is that I was able to zoom in with the .mov files he sent me and take a freeze frame of that, but if I tried to apply any movement, the entire clip freaked out and got blurry, even when rendered and exported. It just doesn’t make sense – I’ve worked with all kinds of clips and aspect ratios and quality, and I’ve never had an issue.

I just ended up doing it in Motion (which I should have done from the beginning, except it took at least twice as long to do each clip.) The .mov files that the client sent stayed at the same quality level in Motion.

  • OMG, I’ve been dealing with this problem for about the past month – something got messed up when I imported something. Not sure how that setting got changed, but I assumed it was just the file I was working with. Tonight I opened a new project and same thing! I’m glad I came on here to see what I could do (troubleshooting on my own was less than productive because I started getting really mad!)

Great idea – since he’s against a black background, I can just match the color in Motion …

That’s what I thought. I will email him and see if he can delete it from the original project.

I tried to upload an example, but I was having issues. Sorry. It’s been a long day.

We send to both national and local news stations. Everyone currently requests b-roll on Beta, occasionally DVD. (This is b-roll of animals – we’re a zoo. This footage airs on everything from local cable to Jumbotrons to commercials on cable. Occasionally networks like Discovery will request footage from us as well.)

My main concern is cost. I’m looking at a budget of $10,000, a budget that’s already been cut to zero dollars and I had to beg for it back. Pretty much what I buy now is all I get budget-wise for the next 5 years. I don’t want to commit to the HVX and end up having to go out and spend thousands more in a year or two, because I won’t have that money and I’ll be screwed.

As far as our archives, we have footage stretching back to the 1940’s on everything from film to Umatic to Beta to Hi-8 to MiniDV, so NOTHING matches.

Since we have DV now, I don’t want to have to revamp our entire system because again, I have no money.

I feel like I’m talking myself out of the HVX, which is what I ideally want, but I just feel like the cost is way too much at this. So can I get away with using the DVX for another five years?

Hi, thanks for your advice. I followed your directions and yes, the camera DOES show up. And you won’t believe it – it WORKS now. I swear to you I restarted this computer a dozen times, I had all the FireWire unplugged, etc.

However, I will tell you that this time I also unplugged the external hard drive, which is not connected with a FireWire cable – it’s a G-drive, and I’m not sure what kind of cable it uses. But the bad part is that that’s the drive I have to capture all this footage to! So I tried plugging the drive back in, and guess what? Doesn’t work.

Oh well. I really appreciate your advice, though, I probably wouldn’t have thought to unplug the drive otherwise. At least I’ll know what to do if I need a small amount of footage captured, but the space I have on the internal hard drive isn’t enough for this project.

Guess I’ll be shlepping it home anyway. But I’m glad I figured out why it wasn’t working. I was ready to pull my hair out!

I ended up making a copy of the original file (it was a jpg.) Now it works.

I still don’t understand why only one out of five projects had that error, though, since I was using the same source material. (Those projects are still using the original jpg, too.)

I’m not sure what I could possibly have done incorrectly.
