  • Open FCP HD 4.5 in new FCP 7

Posted by Lynette Gilbert on January 30, 2010 at 5:30 pm

I am finally getting around to finishing my master’s thesis documentary (just tweaking it.) The file that I have is from FCP HD 4.5, I have since upgraded a few times and am now using FCP 7.

I can still edit on my old computer with the old version, but I’d love to be able to use Motion and the other aspects of the Studio programs …

However, I cannot open the old 4.5 files with version 7. Any suggestions? It’s not a dire situation or anything, but it would be nice to be able to update my documentary using my awesome new programs.

    Why not? What happens?

It should just update the project file and then work fine.

You would think so, because I think I have FCP 5 at work and have worked on files from work on my home computer when I was using FCP 6.

When I try to open the file from FCP, I cannot even click on the file to open it. I’ve attached a pic of the folder.

When I double click on the file to open it into FCP, I get an error box, also attached as a jpg.

Argh I forgot to upload the images.

Notice the icons are not FCP icons. I am currently working on this project on my old computer, so I know the files are valid.

This is the error box I get if I try to double click on the file.

Hmmmm… Open FCP, then use the OPEN command and go to one of those files.

Can you Copy one into a new folder, ARCHIVE IT (right click on the folder and choose COMPRESS) and send it to me at comeback@mac.com? Lemme see what I can do.

A quick thing to try. Add .fcp at the end of the file name. This looks like a copy error, not bringing over the resource info.

Yeah, try that. It worked for me.

It worked. I feel like an idiot now. In my defense, I am hopped up on all kinds of bronchitis medicine … and my husband, who normally helps me if I’m having a stupid moment, is hopped up on flu medicine, so I think we’re both pretty worthless when it comes to technology right now.

THANK YOU GUYS!!!! I really appreciate it.

Sometimes things like this are easier to see from the outside. We don’t see these file type tags so we don’t give them much thought, out of sight, out of mind.
