  • Removing timecode from client’s mpg

Posted by Lynette Gilbert on February 3, 2009 at 2:55 am

I just got some files sent to me for my freelancing … and had something I’ve never run into before.

The mpg has a timecode on it. I cannot edit mpgs in FCP (if someone knows how to do this, please tell me!) because no audio shows up. I converted the files to DV files, which I’ve done before.

However, I have NO idea how to remove the timecode! Is this something I can do before I convert to DV, and if so, how?

    Thanks!

I tried to upload an example, but I was having issues. Sorry. It’s been a long day.

You can use MPEG-Streamclip (Free) to convert to a Quicktime format.

You mean it has a timecode burned in window on the video? Then you blow it up to crop out the TC, but usually this means someone else has already performed a rough cut and the client is going somewhere else. Or you are cutting from a window burn file for some reason.

Use MPGStreamclip and convert your .mpg’s to DV50 or better codec. Ideally 8b Unc.
There is nothing to get rid of the burnt-in TC.
The only solution is the one pointed by Walter.
    Probably will destroy the picture.

That’s what I thought. I will email him and see if he can delete it from the original project.

You could crop the frame as needed and place it on a graphic background. That way you don’t have to blow up the image and lose quality (which is already taking a hit coming from mpg).

Great idea – since he’s against a black background, I can just match the color in Motion …
