I think the problem with the system clock is that it could affect playback speed, sync etc. I think when you overclock with this utility the mac basically doesn’t have a real sense of time anymore

  • Hi Rafael,

I did some unscientific tests with Instant HD when it first came out and my results had little artifacts throughout, like pixels or groups of pixels that would sort of crawl, wiggle around and sometimes just sort of flip out like the signal was breaking down there. I found the upres results with Compressor (since version 2) to be much better, as long as you use its highest quality settings for scaling.

However, I was testing with relatively low quality SD footage, uprezzing to HD so that really pushes the capabilities of the software. You can of course download the Instant HD demo and try it yourself, it may be better if your 720p footage is already pretty sharp, etc.

You can also try Digital Anarchy Resizer, but I believe this will also not be appreciably better than what you’ve got with Compressor. The retiming/resizing algorithms Apple built in there since v2 are really very good

    Best of luck

  • Sorry,

I was wrong. Wow that really is stupid. Even if you add the transitions separately, like using Command-T and then Command-Option-T, once there is a transition on both the audio and the video it wants to adjust them together.

That is simply an oversight in the interaction design I think. They can tweak that, they should

    Check your Autosave Vault

Do you also have previously saved versions of the project?

I use a combination of both the Autosave vault *and* resaving my current project under a different name every day, like “My Project_20080605” for today’s date because I don’t trust FCP not to cause corruption, as it used to do back in the version 4/5 days

I have on occasion lost work but usu. not more than until the last Autosave. I also keep the Autosave interval at 15 minutes.
However the caveat with Autosave is that the interval is reset every time you hit Command-S, which means if you habitually save your work after every change, you can go for hours with no Autosaves being generated.

My rule of thumb with FCP and saving/backup is to err *WAY* on the side of caution

    Good luck

  • It does work — you use the option key to select *only* the dissolve you want, either audio or video,

..then to adjust the video dissolve you hit Control-D and you get a Duration dialog.

Or to adjust the audio dissolve you just hit the Enter key on the keypad and you get a Duration dialog.

    Just enter the duration you want;

but obviously yes dragging the edge of the transition doesn’t work as it should WRT option key

If you are working with Final Cut Studio 2 then you’ve got the tools with Motion 3.

Otherwise the Soft Spot filter mentioned above

  • The best way to scale it in the timeline is to drop the ref movie in to the 1080 timeline and then with the clip selected do “Conform to Sequence” under the “Modify” menu.

However as stated elsewher, Compressor might offer you better upres quality if you have the render time. You have to choose “Statistical Prediction” which is the “Better” form of scaling but takes a lot of time.

In my experience it works as well as tools like Instant HD

Alright I just cross-posted about this

I hope Apple reads these forums — those red sync things are starting to really annoy me

If your footage is in SD DV (and not just the sequence settings) you treat it as an offline and redigitize.

Select your sequence in the bin and run Media Manager -> Create Offline, with the *new* offline project sequence set to the correct type (HD 1080 whatever) and this will create a new project with all the clips offline (unconnected to media). Select all your offline clips in this new sequence and Batch Capture..

Hopefully your recapture will come through without any sync problems — as long as none of the original clips were very long, like more than a few minutes or so, it should be alright
