I’m sure you guys are right, FCPX won’t attempt to optimize files it can handle, such as a prores or an aiff.
My issue was that I was using an M4A file and during that section I was having a a lot of playback issues, as if I was editing from h.264 files.
My understanding is that M4A is a container which could either be Apple Lossless or AAC.
I like working with AIFF or WAV because then I immediately know they are ready to edit and don’t eat up processing power.
However, after converting my m4a to an aiff outside of FCPX and using the aiff instead, I’m still getting the slow down so there must be another issue I need to investigate further.

Could you put each audio track in it’s own compound clip, then multicam the compound clips?

I have had numerous crashes, but have only lost an edit once, which is once too many. FCPX needs some method of versioning or to bring back the autosave concept. I’ve heard buzzes that this is being worked on.
That being said, is there a backup project in your Final Cut Projects folder? That might recover some of your edits.

I want to select it to color correct it or change some other property. Or to grab it so I can drop it down to the main storyline. Or to move it up a layer when I have a photo collage going on. I can think of dozens of reason to want to select something other than what’s in the primary storyline.

Ram isn’t your only issue here. I used to edit with 4gigs on my macbook pro 13″ and it wasn’t that slow.
Here are some tips:
Restart your computer once FCPX starts acting up. Usually just restarting FCPX is enough but this is a very easy way to fix lots of problems.
Make sure you’re working with easy to use footage. If it’s in native format it’ll make everything slower. On your system I’d suggest starting by transcoding everything to proxies.
Let FCPX copy your source media into the event folder, and don’t store your event on your system hard drive. Edit on a firewire or USB 3.0 external drive (although USB 2.0 for proxy is very workable).
See if your system can use the graphics card, that’ll make some renders super fast.
Check the logs in your console app for any funny business.

Does restarting have any effect? Can you move your project to an external drive?

To get you started:
Duplicate the portion of your clip where you want the ghosting to occur. Add it directly on top of the original clip (command-c to copy, alt-v to connect to the storyline)
Slip it forward or backwards a few frames. Change the opacity of the top clip to around 50%.

Videos will appear on youtube before they appear as completed in your share monitor. The share monitor seems to wait for youtube to finish processing the video before it reports it as done. So if something crashes before you reach 100%, there’s a chance it uploaded fine anyway.
