Leave the expression on the layers and only tie the random values to a slider expression on a Null, like this:
min=thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).effect(“Random Min”)(“Slider”);
max=thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).effect(“Random Max”)(“Slider”);
numgen=random(min,max);-Lloyd

Make sure you file a bug so the AE team is aware of the problem and queue’s it to be fixed.

Buena Depth Cue does this. I think DigiEffects sells this plugin now. It was not a very elegant solution as you need to “bake” your scene so anytime you make a change you need to rebake it. What really needs to happen is AE needs to open the API to allow third party plugins to drive the built-in camera DOF blur.

Then you should lower the aperture on your camera. The camera can only be have 1 focus distance, but lowering the aperture will widen the area around that focus point that will be in focus. Also, you should only have on length call in your expression. Right now it calculates all three lengths but you only get Text 3 because that is the last length that it calculates.

Do you want all 3 text layers to be in focus at the same time or do you want to rack focus between them?

Use the beam effect on a comp sized layer and pickwhip the Starting and Ending Points to the position of your dots.
