hey there, so yes i have after effects but have yet to ever use it so unless there is a simple way to explain i prob should wait to use it when i actually know the basics at least right…the media came to me as a low res 3-d previz – its a animation qt at 640×480 @ 18fps

    thanks in advance G!

  • Thank you for the responses most makes sense and i actually already understood so here is what i am still not sure about:

    Just a few questions –
1)Jason you said that i should probably work in HDV 1080i50 since the majority of the footage right now is in that format – how would i uprez the DV footage in compressor exactly?

“If you do that, then simply go through the DV clips applying the Shift Fields filter accordingly.”

Do you mean once i uprez them in compressor THEN bring in fcp and apply shift fields – would’nt compressor alread yhave done that in the process of uprezing the resolution from 720×576(PAL) to HDV 1440×1080 or whatever?

Then this other route you suggest – “You could try this to make sure it’s right: select all DV clips, right-click and remove attributes, check filters. This removes all filters so don’t do this if clips are CC’d etc. Then command-c to copy – then, make a new sequence, easy setup HDV 1080i50, and paste clips in to this, the SFF should be applied correctly for the DV clips.” – do you mean to then just paste in and render in FCPO because it would apply the shift field filters the opposite way it did (+1) in the PAL DV timeline as opposed to doing that in Compressor???

If your main source is HDV, then I’d stick with that if you want an HD master as your deliverable

If not, you need to decide on the best workflow.

If I were in your position, I’d take the path of least resistance. If you’ve 20% DV footage, and the rest is HDV, I’d be inclined to stick with HDV and up-res the DV. It may look pants for the offline but you can do it properly for the online – either use Compressor to up-res (creating new media) or something like Digital Anarchy’s ReSizer.

If you do that, then simply go through the DV clips applying the Shift Fields filter accordingly.

  • hey guys thanks so much for the responses – so i guess the question i still have is which format should my sequences be moving forward if the majority of the footage is hdv 1080i50? A small amount of the footage is PAL DV but it is important footage and does need to be in the trailer as well as the full documentary itself – what would you guys suggest – any other thoughts?

In terms of just resolving this trailer issue it seems you guys are suggesting that i switch clips that are set to upper back to lower in that the sequence itself is DV PAL which is lower – i just wish i could speak to the editor because i want to know what if any of the filters he actually applied and which FCP did automatically…

what a mess!! any other advice would be great

    again thanks everyone

September 7, 2008 at 4:04 pm in reply to: DV PAL into NTSC playable DVD? PLEASE HELP!!

Hey thanks for the fast response you rock – however when i did a test a while back for them i went this route using uncompressed 8 bit and setting it to best to cook overnight on my work 8-core and the resulting ntsc video file had this jittery frame playback – i never could get down to the bottom of this so we just made PAL dvd’s at the time – BUT now the client really needs NTSC playable DVD’s to showcase the film and I dont know what to do in order to make this work.

In the end what is needed is a playable NTSC DVD with the 2 trailers for this film – i am familiar with DVDSP and all that its just the transcode and encode for DVD that seem to be creating problems.

Any other advice would be great in that i dont know what else to do at this point.

    thanks

  • great thanks

where is the levels filter btw?
    lisa

  • ok well i have 2 quicktimes which are PAL
    1 is 720×576 25 FPS h.264
the 2nd is says in quicktime that it is 1024×576 but in fcp it says its 720×576.

i just ran through compressor using a custom setting which was the following:

animation ntsc – frame size same as source – the result looks awful and i use better for motion estimation in compressor. it made both of them 720×576 so the larger resoltuion file looks squished and they playback looks all jittery and messed up. these both are trailers which need to go on a playable dvd by this afternoon and i fear i am running out of time to make the deadline.

please anyone help i will even call you if need be : ) to get this done

    thanks

great help jeremy thanks so much for taking the time to reply and fast!

it looks like the P2 i’ll be getting doesn ot have pal capability and the HDV camera is filming in utah and i need to shoot this weekend in nyc so it looks like my only option in that its no budget.

in that case what format would you recommend i shoot with the P2 – i do remember my previous postings where the pro res render setting was suggested and i will indeed implement that. – an important note to make also is that 10 hours has been edited on a hdv 1080i sequence – the other half which i just ingested has yet to be edited and now it looks like the director will have funds to shoot with a P2 and/or XDCAM and wants to because of the better quality – granted its no full hd and only prosumer.

I will look up the p2 manual now to check out settings – thanks for the tips.

let mek now your thoughts on this and thanks for agan for your wisdom sir.

    ALSO JEREMY
just to be clear about gamma as you discuss – how do i achieve normal gamma settings and adjust according to room or outdoor light…and also, what is coring and where do i access that on the camera?

again this is for 1080i50 – can i even shoot PAL 1080i50 format on this camera and does that make sense considering the info i stated about my HDV footage in my previous post?

curious to get your advice and feedback…

    thank you
