Hey Guys!!
So its time to layoff and I have a couple questions because another editor and I are noticing little jagged lines along the red lines in an actor’s shirt collar – This can be seen i nthe original files created with the xdcam transfer tool Sony provides – when viewed in qt we see that issue in the original transferred files…for broadcast HDCAM layoff is there anything that can be done to remove these jagged lines??
I just did a test export qt and in qt pro it says its XDCAM and i guess i was under the impression that when you switch the render tab to ProRes that when you render the sequence and kick out a QT file it would be in the ProRes codec – CLEARLY i was wrong…any thoughts on how to proceed in trying to clean up these little teeth in the red and also layoff to hdcam accordingly??
thanks

June 23, 2009 at 4:52 pm in reply to: Mixed formats – which sequence format to use when cutting a Reel?ok well did you see the link in my original post where it shows all the info for each of the video files i am working with?? – i was just thinking maybe it might be better to remove fields from the clips that have them and just work in a D1 sequence in fcp where i chaged the fields tab to none in sequence settings…overall thank you SO SO much for the straight forward advice its been a big help ; )
if you have any further thoughts just let me know

June 23, 2009 at 5:05 am in reply to: Mixed formats – which sequence format to use when cutting a Reel?Another question ebgs the question as well: that is how to then remove fields of the final web delivaerable h.264 640×360 qt file??
Do I use Compressor to crop and remove fields OR do I do this process entirely in AE – ideally my goal is to get the best looking result in a 640×360 h.24 qt in the 20-30 mb file size range for a 1:00 minute reel for web.
Any info / help would be great
best

June 23, 2009 at 4:23 am in reply to: Mixed formats – which sequence format to use when cutting a Reel? Also forgot to ask the question of why add fields to all of these progressive assets when the delivery is for web in the first place?? Could’nt i remove fields in AE for all of the already D1 assets and just have my fcp sequence be none for fields?
thank you

June 23, 2009 at 4:08 am in reply to: Mixed formats – which sequence format to use when cutting a Reel?Hey John thanks for this awesome help much appreciated
just have a couple questions – I am curious about why using compressor over AE is suggested? I know how to use both apps for creating D1 media but you allude to some specific setting for pixel aspect ratio settings…Also curious if what you are suggesting also involves adding lower fields & CCIR 601 non square pixels to everything as D1 would suggest??
Also are you familiar with AE and think that the 30 fps to 29.97 is better handled in Compressor?
I def don’t like to be frustrated which is why i posted in the first place – i know conforming is the best way to do this project.
any thoughts?
thank you

hey guys
thanks for the fast responses – you rock!so just to be clear on this you are saying to set render tab to prores and then layoff the sequence as is to hdcam – no need to change to uncompressed 8 bit – also would it hurt in any way to kick out the pro res qt and bring back into an 8 but uncompressed hd sequence or would there just be no difference and an unnecessary extra step of re compressing?
many thanks

we have all blackmagic HD & HD extreme cards…so as long as i render at proRes i should be fine to layoff in that codec or no??
I was under the impression that something about the GOP in XDCAM is why you render out ProRes – regardless i am wondering also if in the sequence we can just switch the compressor setting to uncompressed 8 bit and then just re-render ?

June 22, 2009 at 4:08 pm in reply to: Cutting a Reel with mixed formats – best practice?this will be for web so forget the dvd thing…
and the blacks i meant i will make it 640×360 in compressor there by removing top and bottom which includes any black ltrbxing from assets i made ltrbx d1 for editing with.

June 22, 2009 at 1:42 pm in reply to: Cutting a Reel with mixed formats – best practice?hey raphael
i am very confused by what you said here – ultimately i will be cropping out the black on the top and bottom in compressor to deliver a 640×360 web qt file for this reel – so given the different formats i have to work with why would i use dv as a sequence setting – your post does not explain this at all??any thoughts from others would be great too : )
thanks

May 19, 2009 at 9:17 pm in reply to: 24fps 1920×1080 Progressive project – playback on reference monitor w/ Blackmagic card??No i know it was ONLY a TEST – for sh*t sake ya know just wanted to see what would happen…I know what pulldown is and I use AE usually to do this or remove it when needed.
Anyways not sure i really understand what exactly Cinema Tools is doing in the conform process but i will look it up online to see if i can get the scoop – just curious to learn further about this.
