  • Cutting a Reel with mixed formats – best practice?

    Hey friends!

so i have to cut my friends reel and he has given me a drive with media that varies in format and i am curious to get opinions on best practice.

This will be mostly just for web & dvd so i am thinking to cut a D1 time line and then crop in compressor to 640×360 for a 16×9 website format which is cool with my friend…SO my question is with all these different formats in varying frame sizes and pixel aspect rations – what is the bet way to go about doing this …i have AE CS4 to conform when needed but ideally i would just have fcp do the scaling for me…

the big concern is like if i take the 720×540 square pixel media and turn all those qt’s in After Effects into D1 my rectangles become squares etc.

any thoughts on hop best to approach cutting something with the varying formats???

This link shows a grab of the formats in question for this reel project i am cutting:

    Hi Lisa,
D1 is 720×486 and no one of your output will be this size.
Your DV will be 720×480, so drop everything in a DV (720×480) sequence.
Just be careful with the 30fps stuff.

    hey raphael
i am very confused by what you said here – ultimately i will be cropping out the black on the top and bottom in compressor to deliver a 640×360 web qt file for this reel – so given the different formats i have to work with why would i use dv as a sequence setting – your post does not explain this at all??

any thoughts from others would be great too : )

    thanks

[lisa rolley] “with why would i use dv as a sequence setting “
I’m not suggesting using the DV codec.
DV is the same size than the DVDs MPEG-2: 720×480.
This setting lets your DVD ready.

I don’t understand which Blacks do you intend to cut.

I would drop the SD sequence in a 640×360 Square pixels sequence and done.

this will be for web so forget the dvd thing…

and the blacks i meant i will make it 640×360 in compressor there by removing top and bottom which includes any black ltrbxing from assets i made ltrbx d1 for editing with.
