If I have to use Capture Now I treat the media as if it came off tapeless media and back it up to another drive. This is particularly true with some HDV sources that just won’t batch capture (repeated abortive attempts to cue up).

Try using MPEG Streamclip to open one of the MPEG2 files. It might work as it does with a DVD, demuxing the file and saving to the Quicktime codec of your choice. I haven’t tried this, but Streamclip is free if you don’t already have it. https://www.squared5.com/

I spoke too soon, the file contained video, but no audio. BTW, I still have Cleaner 6.x on my PPC system which supports Real Media. It still works under Tiger, but doesn’t have a preset for mobile. I guess a setting could be created if Cleaner’s Real codecs are modern enough.

On Intel it successfully installed, but the export component did not appear in Quick time Pro.
It kind of worked on my PPC G5. When I say kind of worked, it gave an “unexpected termination” error message at the end of encoding, but still created a playable file. I used it on some time ago on Panther, but haven’t had any calls for it after Tiger. Perhaps it’s not worth the effort.

Thanks for your input. What I was referring to was a component analog to digital capture using the DV codec. I was assuming that the original poster might want to stay in DV. In that case the A to D conversion (decoding and encoding) would would be of lesser quality then a DV capture via Firewire.Of course superior results can be obtained by capturing to a higher quality codec such as uncompressed 10-bit via component analog or SDI. This assumes that the original poster has storage that is up to the task.

I’ve had this happen from DVCam tapes (although the situation is probably not limited to DVCam). My solution was to capture the material as analog component via my AJA Io. While not as clean as native DV, it allowed me to get the material into my system and continue the edit. The results were quite acceptable. You may be able to use one of the two decks you mentioned (M10 and 1500) as an analog to digital device. The other could serve as the player.

I’ve had this happen before with my Io (using XServe RAID). Usually restarting FCP or a reboot fixes it.
Also try selecting “Abort Capture on Dropped Frames” FCP’s User Preferences. If the capture aborts after a few seconds you’ll know that your drive is not fast enough.
You cannot capture 8 or 10-bit uncompressed on Firewire or Internal Drives.
