FAQ is underway — Walter and I could use your help
Posted by Ron Lindeboom on May 20, 2008 at 10:25 pmHello Everyone,
Walter and I are working on getting a FAQ done for this forum and if you have any suggestions of your favorite/great posts/solutions, please respond to this thread and add the link pointers to links here in the COW. It will help simplify our job and will also lessen the amount of time it will take to get it built and added to this forum.
Thank you,
Ron Lindeboom

May 20, 2008 at 11:32 pmGreat you’re doing this, guys. Deinterlacing is one that comes up often. Here are just a few threads that answer a lot of questions:

May 21, 2008 at 1:29 amI think the whole graphic file size / pixel dimension question is one I’ve seen over and over.
It could apply to the other NLE, Photoshop and After Effects forums as well. The usual questions are:Why is my image stretched (or squished)?
What are square pixels? It’s not specific to FCP, but it is certainly pertinent.
I also think a reminder to check the FCP manual (and the other FCS manuals as well) should be prominently displayed. A suggestion to read the manual from front to back could give a few rookies some fundamentals that are lacking. It’s very comprehensive and better than most textbooks on the subject.

May 21, 2008 at 3:54 amAll of Shane’s stock answers. They need to be more searchable though as if when you type in a problem, it should point to Shane’s FAQ.
Also, how to down convert with a Kona:

May 21, 2008 at 3:55 amInterlacing, as in “why are there horizontal lines in my footage/still?” or “why is my freeze frame vibrating?”
Aspect ratios in general. Also, how to make 16X9 into 4X3, how to make 4X3 into 16X9, how to letterbox 16X9 into a 4X3 sequence or pillarbox 4X3 into a 16X9 sequence.
2:3 pulldown, as in “Why does my 24P footage show up in the browser as 29.97?”, and also the difference between 24P and 24PA (and how to tell).

May 21, 2008 at 10:21 amHow to rip non-copyrighted video from a DVD is a popular question.
A: MPEG Streamclip, Cinematize, Mac the Ripper, or DVD XDV. Import VOB file (video only) directly into FCP.

May 21, 2008 at 1:31 pmAn Old Codec Repository, I remembered that (I thought ) there was a YUV Quicktime Codec that would allow old Cinewave quicktimes to be played on intel machines.. and Jeremy G had it handy… Not everybody upgrades with the the newest machines and gear with the herd. Like me, I am about 2+ years behind. So to have a quick reference location for these codecs and new gear (2+ years ago) workarounds would be great.
