I’ve got an NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 on my Mac Pro and I have always had trouble with the Mac crashing in Final Cut. I installed a CoreMelt plug in and FC is very unstable. According to the CoreMelt people the crash record says it is something to do with the graphic card.
I wonder if anyone else has the same trouble? My only choice seems to be to take the card out and replace it but I’m loathe buy another until I can confirm that this really is the problem.

Hi,
I’m using a PMW EX1. Never had this problem before. Except I’ve upgraded to Snowleopard in between, which has made my machine much faster so I can’t see that as the reason for this.
I’ve been using the nesting function a lot on this edit as I’ve tested various edits, which has caused plenty of crashes. So perhaps that is a culprit. However, in theory that shouldn’t cause problems with the bottom level.
Previously I’ve been able to use many different sound tracks on the time line without having to render all the time to play back the audio. Can’t I just set it to render for playback automatically? It seems such a pointless thing to have to do.
48khz, XDCam 1080 25p setting for transfer.

Yeah! Got it! You have to trash the preferences and then re-install the quicktime desktopvideoout.component! There’s a bug in the latest upgrade.
Phew… was beginning to think I was going to have to go through the whole horrible routine of reinstalling everything.
I’ve done that several times before and I still get the crashes. Everyone I know has much the same problem with mixed codecs. Keep them separate or convert them all to apple pro res seems to be the main work around.
Mind, since upgrading to 7 I find that if have two or more layers of video track on the time line I can crash FC. Maybe that’s something to do with the quicktime upgrade as well and hopefully won’t happen now.
As for Snow Leopard… I’m staying well clear for the time being. I figure I’ll leave that for twelve months. Upgrading to 7 was traumatic enough. Had to have four different sets of upgrade disks sent to me before I could get an install! Kept getting disks that threw up error messages half way through the install. Some of the disks were blank and some labelled incorrectly. Apple were suitably apologetic. I assume they much have had a lot of complaints coming in that month.

How do I trash the preferences?
I have lots of source material in various different project – Mostly i use EX1 XDCam settings for my HD material.
I don’t mix formats on the same time line as FC crashes if I even think about that.
Doesn’t matter which project I’m working on, the Desktop Preview no longer functions properly. It used to. Doesn’t now.

Hmm. Doesn’t work for mine.
What else could it be?

I have exactly the same problem, except that it started off by stuttering and then after I tried changing settings, became a freeze frame. It freezes the Canvas as well. So I have to switch of Desktop preview to work.
When I replace the DesktopVideoOut.component on mine with the one from the Install file, I’m afraid it still didn’t work.
Is there anything else I can try?

Well that’s at least something… Wish I’d known this before forking out for the card. I’d have probably just bought myself a second hand camera!
Upgrading it myself looks too scary. I’ll see if SOny, unlike Apple, here in Hong Kong know what I’m talking about when I phone them.
