I just bought a 32gb SxS Pro memory card for my EX1 and I’m given an Unknown Media message and no way of formatting the card.

I check the web site and it says EX1 may need a software upgrade… I’m assuming that’s the problem. So how do I get one of these? I can’t find anything on the sony sites.

Try to format it in your computer. FAT 32.

Afraid I haven’t got any slots that fit that card. Is it the card or the camera that’s the problem?

    Connect your camera via USB.
Will show up like any other external device.

    Unknown media in the camera?
Camera should be at firmware 1.11 or higher to use 32GB cards.

Press and hold MENU and CANCEL, SEL/SET to access the maintenance menu.

You’ll need to upgrade the firmware. Depending on where you are, Sony will charge you between $0 and $200 to do it, and take between 2 days and 2 months to get it back to you. Or if you don’t mind risking turning it into a brick, you can do it yourself.

There are places to download the update software, step-by-step instructions (https://www.vimeo.com/2686923), etc. Just google EX-1 firmware update.

And you’ll be able to use inexpensive SDHC cards.

Well that’s at least something… Wish I’d known this before forking out for the card. I’d have probably just bought myself a second hand camera!

Upgrading it myself looks too scary. I’ll see if SOny, unlike Apple, here in Hong Kong know what I’m talking about when I phone them.
