    Jason, Mark,

Many thanks for your input. I’m glad I am not a sole voice on this and these provide some credible solutions.

It would be ‘nice’ to have the ability to select a range and then colour code it, perhaps or in someway to identify or mark a process, or perhaps use the “Range” tool and be able to colour code it?

Until then, I shall endeavor with these excellent suggestions.

Thanks you and a Happy New Year,

    Lawrence

    Jeremy,

I found that if there are any issues that are, if you can excuse the bad analogy, “Bermuda Triangle” issues – such as events loading without resolving anything and stopping all work – then the solution is to quit/ force quit FCPX, press and hold the “OPTION” key while clicking on the “GO” pull down; thus revealing the ‘hidden’ “LIBRARY” option in that pulldown.
On opening the Library, you select the “PREFERENCES” folder and delete the:

    com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist
    com.apple.FinalCut.plist

Restarted FCPX and everything was working beautifully.

It’s a little like performing surgery without anesthetic but it’s quick, easy and has NOT disturbed any of the 35 projects that are in my Project Browser or the multitude of events and their associated keywords in the Event Browser.

and that’s that…. I’d hoped that the trashing of pref files had been solved in FCPX but in case of impossible problems, trash your prefs.

    Ecstatic with FCPX

December 24, 2011 at 4:09 pm in reply to: Clarification on moving projects and events

    Jeremy,

Wonderful news! Thank you. I’ll try and be clearer in my confusion and hope that you can point me in the right direction. (as I write this I am SURE that I have misunderstood a basic premise in FCPX)

Currently, I have my unedited footage on my scratch drive. I then open FCPX; create event and associate this with a project. Then I import, to event the files.

The question is, succinctly, after importing the data to my FCPX event, can I shift the folder with the raw data somewhere else?

Does this make sense? Merry Christmas to all, btw.

December 6, 2011 at 3:54 pm in reply to: FCPX UI goes ‘screwy’

    Tom,

The delivery is via multiple formats: 720p, m4v, mp4, WMV. I believe this is the ONE area that I am currently lacking in any real knowledge and it bugs me silly to think that I can’t work it out and yet, I’m too embarrassed to ask!

    Regards,

    Jeremy,

My one (and only gripe) about FCPX compared to Legacy is the ability to ‘wrap’ up a project and move it lock, stock and two smoking barrels to archive it. NOW, saying that and realizing that FCPX is built around the core of a dB the relative ease of moving projects+events is not the same. Probably why a good many people have had initial ‘issues’ with FCPX. So, the move project option or the duplicate project option is satisfactory as it is. It is purely a matter of getting my mind around the dB side of things and how that works.

(Jeremy) Looks like you are using 444 media on screen captures, why not use 422 or 422 LT?
I am using ProRes4444 for this project and it is a screenshot one. The level of quality (and overhead), I’ve found, cannot be beaten. I used Intermediate codec in Legacy and Animation to great effect but as most people I’ve had the fortune to talk to wonder why I’d use FCP for screenshot work, finding the ‘right’ workflow is a little problematic for me – then again, I could be a real dunce – who knows. So at the end of the day, I use ProRes4444 and then shove it through Compressor 4 (which I truly love – I hear tumbleweeds in the background now) for the final output to the client.
The issue is now I have to go and purchase either Apple’s or Amazon’s storage facility!!!!! 🙂

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

    Regards,

    Lawrence

    David,

Thanks, I’ve just gone and freed up more than 200 gigs by deleting the ‘unused’ render files, via the project browser. Back to the salt mines!

Tom, it’s ProRes4444 media and I think I may have gotten to the bottom of the issue.

    Graphics card is dying
    AND
Only 40gb’s left on my scratch drives of 6TB’s total. Wish there was some better media management tools!

    Tom,
Thank you for my oversight. Here’s the file, hopefully…

December 5, 2011 at 9:28 pm in reply to: Adding keywords in storyline

    Tim,

Many thanks for the workarounds. Now my poor gray-matter will go into overtime!

Of all the suggestions, I would hazard that assigning a Role might be the most expedient although I’m sure I’ll end up with quite a few.
The efficiency of ⌘K can’t be beat – minimal origamic finger combo’s too.
Roles ‘looks’ to be more efficient if you set up the project beforehand. I am naive of the use of them in my work, I am embarrassed to say.
The ‘Notes” section will need more prodding and poking to see what it can deliver – but this is the best option, for me, that you suggest, Tim.
Grouping clips and the thought of renaming them is another method I will have to explore soon, methinks.

Back to the proverbial Salt Mines, but thank you for your ideas.

December 4, 2011 at 7:01 pm in reply to: Feature request

Having stared at the project browser for most of the morning, I’m becoming more convinced with the need to select multiple projects and utilise some more basic manipulations: I.e. Move project, clean up the project, duplicate, send to compressor and/or render… In other words any admin/ management features should be able to be achieved in the Project Browser.
Now I’m off to fill in a feature request – I feel so empowered :)!!!
