  • Clarification on moving projects and events

Posted by Lawrence Eaton on December 24, 2011 at 1:34 am

It’s the end of the day: my eyes are popping out of my skull but I’ve just come to the end of a project and want to transfer the projects and media onto my server.

Is the ‘best’ way to open up the Project Browser and select FILE>MOVE? Choosing the 2nd option in the dialogue box.

If this is so and I move the project+associated event(s) to my server, can I delete the folders with the original material in them?

I’m going around and around with this in my mind and would appreciate your thoughts and direction please…

    Tired and puzzled,

    Lawrence

That’s a good way. You can also use the Finder, but using FCP ensures everything makes it.

Not quite sure what you mean here. Delete from where? If you move them, they’ll be on the server.

    Jeremy,

Wonderful news! Thank you. I’ll try and be clearer in my confusion and hope that you can point me in the right direction. (as I write this I am SURE that I have misunderstood a basic premise in FCPX)

Currently, I have my unedited footage on my scratch drive. I then open FCPX; create event and associate this with a project. Then I import, to event the files.

The question is, succinctly, after importing the data to my FCPX event, can I shift the folder with the raw data somewhere else?

Does this make sense? Merry Christmas to all, btw.

Yes, you can. The FCPX manual explains it pretty well, actually.

The media can be moved to any drive, as long as there’s a root level “Final Cut Pro Events” and “Final Cut Pro Projects” folder. You can plug in a MacOS formatted hard drive, an create a new, blank event and project to easily automate the folder creation process, or simply use FCPX’s built in move tools.

It’s actually fairly easy once you learn the folder structure.
