Is it possible to append your keyword collection whilst editing in the storyline? As a means of explanation, if I’m editing and want to create a new keyword for an item that reoccurs throughout a segment, can I highlight it and then select ⌘+k to add an existing keyword or a new keyword to it?

Nope. Actually FCPX internally does support it (you can see that in a FCPXML file) but you can’t add keywords on the timeline as of 10.0.2. (But be sure to give feedback about it).

However, there are whole bunch of workarounds to make the clips searchable, and thereby selectable as a group via the Timeline Index.

    – You could rename the clips in the timeline as a group (in the inspector). Making them searchable.
    – You could add a “keyword” to the clip’s Notes field as a group in the inspector.
    – You could assign the clips to a role, and then search for that role in the inspector. Again as a group.

So you’ve got a whole bunch of options. Let me know if any of these don’t make sense.

    Tim,

Many thanks for the workarounds. Now my poor gray-matter will go into overtime!

Of all the suggestions, I would hazard that assigning a Role might be the most expedient although I’m sure I’ll end up with quite a few.
The efficiency of ⌘K can’t be beat – minimal origamic finger combo’s too.
Roles ‘looks’ to be more efficient if you set up the project beforehand. I am naive of the use of them in my work, I am embarrassed to say.
The ‘Notes” section will need more prodding and poking to see what it can deliver – but this is the best option, for me, that you suggest, Tim.
Grouping clips and the thought of renaming them is another method I will have to explore soon, methinks.

Back to the proverbial Salt Mines, but thank you for your ideas.

Glad to help. It helps me avoid actual work 😉

I have used all three options and they all work well. Notes actually very accessible as you can just show the “notes” field in the timeline index. See here:

In addition to Mark’s sage advice, clip markers are also searchable.

Yet another option if you need Event search capability is to match frame the clip back to the Event. The range should be selected, you can keyword that range. This won’t effect your timeline, but will help in future event based searching.
