Well the Kona cards do a 3:2 pulldown on the fly for SD 24p but I am not sure about HD. So our HVX’s shoots 23.976 or 24p video for the American version?

So if it is shooting 23.976 then why does the info say for FCP say that it is non-drop when it clearly is a drop frame at 23.976.

  • Just be careful using that on location. My equipment gets beat up every now and then and I can see a scratch happening on a nice monitor like that.

I also had to decided between the 2 that you are and diceded on the Marshall. Since I shoot outdoors alot and and move around to get many shots the 17″ was not realistic also I could see myself scratching it. The Marshall also has the ability to use a AC plug which is like $15 and then add the battery option later.

Depending on how much you shoot and where you shoot it that 17″ sounds like a pain to take from my studio system to location and back again.

    So I bought the Marshall.

    Good Luck : )

  • The Marshall one is on my list. I saw them at the DV Expo and they had it mounted on an HVX-200 and the image looked nice and had a sharp focus. The Panasonic ones would work to but you can moount them on the camera and if you move around it is nice to be mobile.

Working in HD is something new for me since I got this camera but has proven very hand to do. I always talk to the client first and show some samples of letter box and full screen. So far they have all gone with letter box. But doing a center cut from the HD footage would work to I would just need to frame it correctly when I shoot.

I also do not have and HD monitor and only use my Dell 24″ monitor which is really nice. If I want to check something out I just create a DV50 24p sequence and drag the DVCPRO HD 24p into it and render and view that on my Sony monitor. That has worked out well for me so far. 720p is the format that works out the best for me and what I do. I like shooting at 60p and 24pn into a non interlaced frame. If you are shooting in HD you should get yourself a 7″ Marshall HD Monitor, they are very nice since the one on the HVX is not good quality for shooting HD and you always have to push the Focus Assist button.

    Good Luck

I shoot all my stuff in HD now for SD conversion. The last 2 jobs I did were shot different. 1 was in 720 60p for a 30 second comercial and 720 24pn for a documentry. The one shot in 60p was great because I sat in a wheel chair and a guy pushed me past a bunch of HD tv’s for a commercial for a local TV store. Since the frame was so much larger then an SD frame I dropped the footage into Apples Shake and applied the Smoothcam node which took all the bumps out of the footage. I could not have done this shooting is SD since there is very little room for that type of manipulation.

My workflow process has turned into this. Shot in HD and edit in DVCPRO HD timeline. Export a Quicktime reference movie and import into After Effects where I resize the video in an SD comp and make a movie file that is 29.97. if I shot in 24pn I would also do a 3:2 pulldown for a 29.97 timeline and reimport it into FCP to an uncompressed timeline for SDI output.

I like AE better for doing the conversions. FCP has displayed some quarks for me.

That was interesting to know those facts.

You know I have a PCMCIA adator card for my Laptop that allows insert Compact Flash into it and then into the PCMCIA slot in my Power Book. Do you think it would be posable for Panny to create the new smaller cards which can insert into an older PCMCIA adator card that then slides into the camera. It seems like that would be an easier way for the future.

that is interesting. I always wondered how it would hold up in editing. But it sounds like the AVC is an ‘intra codec’ not GOP. I was not aware that you could break down the H.264 into an intra codec since it’s real power seems to come from GOP.

ahhh, I see, Intresting. I wonder what the benfits would be to intraframe H264? It seems like you would loose the befefits of H264 since the codec is normaly a GOP codec. I would be intreseted in seeing some clips shot with this codec.

if AVC is H264 then it is a heavy compressed coedec. Hands down the image looks awasome that h264 makes and the file sizes are mind blowing for the results. I will be curious what 100mbs will look like since it can get images that are very small and look great.
